Angry Grinders.

(Quick recap first - Sylva Leader + Kwak ZX10 engine AKA "When arranged marriages go bad".)

I love my angry grinder.

Now that my engine is home and hovering above its final resting place, I've been trying to get it just into the right position so that.

1) It fits under the bonnet line. 2) The sump isn't too low. 3) The output shaft will go down the transmission tunnel ok. 4) It doesn't foul the front suspension crossmember. 5) The gearchange shaft is accesible for fabricating a linkage. 6) The headers still fit without chopping. They're lovely micron ones which just need a polish to be beautiful again. 7) It is in such a position that I can make up a cradle to mount it to the main chassis members and pick up on the original mounting points on the engine.

There were a few things all fighting for the same bit of space, and a bit of pondering made me realise that the removal of one 25mm x 25mm tube would allow it to sit in a position that satisfys all of these things.

Fired up angry grinder, lots of noise / sparks, tube falls out, engine falls in. Job done. I can replace this tube with one going from one of the original end points to another point on the chassis where it causes no issues.

I'm getting there.

(We will make no mention of the fact that I had no 4 1/2 " discs for my 4

1/2" grinder, only 5" ones. So this was all done using the above unholy combination and with the safety guard sitting on the bench pondering the meaning of life. Oh, and I appear to have mislaid my goggles...)

Pics to follow when It all looks a bit less post apocalyptic.

Will you not have to dry sump it anyway, with it being a bike engine and expecting to lean over in the corners?

I know a few people who have this basic engine design in their cars. Most have it like I'm having it - in the front with the sprocket adapter to the back. One has it in the back of an MK GTR mounted transversely just like the bike. None of them have ever encountered oil starvation, although having said that, most overfill them very slightly just to be sure. I could fit an accusump as well if it proves to be an issue - dry sumps are well outside any theoretical budget.

My mate with the Hayabusa powered Fisher Fury spent more on his dry sump setup than my car cost me. And he's still blown an engine. He's running slicks right enough and going for records, so I can quite understand that his engine is at way more risk than mine will ever be.

Truth be told, even though it won't be that quick in bike engined car terms, I'll probably never have the bottle to run it that hard anyway. Just have to wait and see :-)
