Brake disc drilling

Well the setup is a bit weird in that the hub sits on the disc, rather than the disc on the hub. I've never had the brakes apart TBH, but from what I understand the holes will locate the hub so they'll need to be accurate. I might pull it apart this weekend to see what i'm up agaisnt.

Indeed, your post was misread.

Reply should be: buy the disks with the correct bolt pattern in the first place. The risks and consequentely costs if you get them wrong are in no relation to the damage caused.

As to Duvel: never drank it, never had any envy to do so. Seeing people who drink it a lot, has put me off the "beneficial argument" of beerdrinking (especially the heavy monks-made stuff).

Should sleep a bit more however.

I've not come across any road car where the disc isn't centred by the hub or a flange on it. Rather like road wheels. Of course we'll now get a long list proving me wrong...;-)

If that's the case, just buy a round file and file the holes where they foul.until the discs fit. As long as there is plenty of support behind the wheel for the bolts/nuts there shouldn't be any problem. Mike.

Which car is it for? Surely you can change the hub carriers to some off a later model to get bigger brakes?

Nope. The hubs bolt to the discs, which are then both mounted on a stub axle. S*it setup TBH. It's on the 360, I'll find a pic in a min

I'm not sure how it all works with the wheel bearings to be honest - I need to take it apart when I get the car back. But this is what it looks like (and is the setup I'm aiming for):

That looks similar to the way the back of a MK2 Golf is done - the wheel bearings actually go into the disk and that goes onto the stub axle, so the hub is an integral part of the disk.

Used to be quite a common arrangement as shown by your photo elsewhere. The disc bolts to the hub and the hub contains the bearings and fits over the stubaxle. Cars I can think of quickly that did it that way are MG midget, MGB, Escort Mk1 and Mk2, Spitfire, GT6, RWD Cavalier.

What weird and wonderful vehicle do you have that nobody makes discs for?

At a guess, he's doing some funny brake conversion on his Volvo.

If it's 4x100 as I've found on the web, then that's the same as a hell of a lot of cars. VWs up until fairly recently - the later and faster / fatter the car, the more likely it is to have switched to 5x100, but MK2 Golfs and some MK3s run 4x100. Vauxhalls, Hondas, presumably some Rovers due to the Honda link, Kias, E30 BMWs and BMW Minis etc...

IMO there is a tendency where once a conversion is done, that it tends to stick as it's a known quantity, if you see what I mean. What you want is a big f*ck off book of disks and dimensions. I suspect the local motor factors will have one under the counter.

The Capri disks should be 4x108, but I imagine they're useful more because the disk is positioned at the right depth (from the looks of the online parts catalogue, bloody shallow, ruling out most modern disks IMO) and so on to use standard calipers without adaptors rather than because of the PCD being nearly there, yes? How important is the centre bore for fitting over the funny axle arrangement?

No idea if that would work, by the way - that's off a very heavily modified Group A spec 360GLT.

Personally I think brakes are the least likely thing I'd try to sort out 'on the cheap'.

PS I can also see mention of 480 Turbo calipers with carlton discs fitting onto it... probably a bit more difficult to get hold of though.

It's a conversion that I've looked into, and I actually had the parts for. However it's not quite as simple as it looks. And I'm not convinced a standard 360 master cylinder would cope with 4 pots that are designed for dual circuits on a 240. Which starts to make things even more expensive.

This capri upgrade is the cheapest *proven* upgrade I've seen, so I'd like to give it a go!

Yeah, the wheels/hubs have a 4x100 pattern, but IIRC the discs/hub pattern is different. So things are not quite as easy as they seem.

Yep, I spent ages studying that (I think I used the EBC catalogue as it was quite handY). I was actually gonna try and fit some 309 GTi discs, but it turns out that a new(ish) member of the V300 Mania forum has done this conversion many time before whilst he was a Volvo mechanic, so it's proven to work.

Exactly. The Capri disc WILL fit, once the wholes have been re-drilled. With possibly a slightly shaving of metal coming off the caliper, which I have no problem with (had to do exactly the same with my old 205 Dturbo brake conversion).

I've had a quick squizz at the online brake catalogue and can't see anything really similar. You could get E30 disks and have them turned down if you were worried about the bolt holes, but I'm not sure I would be...

There are a few *really good* conversions about, but they cost big wonga. The 360 needs new front brakes, so though it would be the ideal time for acheap upgrade. If it starts gettting expensive I'll just get a pair of standard discs and will make do. but vented would be nice :)
