Do you know any good suppliers for touch screens? For a desktop PC rather than a car. I need to develop a kiosk and I'm looking at a touch screen as an option. I know Iiyama do one but it's rather expensive...

I'm using Media Engine, works really well for what I want.

MediaCar looks good too.

Try eBay. I just got Sanyo 15" chassis mount TFT touchscreen for £90 - they really don't go for what they are worth.

I agree with Simon and Ronny. I've used Media Engine and really liked it. Haven't used mediacar, but people who have seem to prefer it.

My Car PC is a bit dead ATM, but I'm working on that.

If you are planning a Linux build, have a look at the dashpc project. MP3car.com as mentioned is the best place for advice.

Jeepers that's cheap. I'll have a look, the thing is though we will be reselling a couple of hundred of these so I will need to purchase brand new. I'll have a look at the Sanyo stuff though, thanks.

I had a look at a site last week, that sold these kiosks for around £3000! I can't buy from ebay because I need to resell a couple of hundred of them, so I need brand new.

Thanks for the reply

complicated.

I've got a Lilliput, too... very leased with it. With the brightness, contrast and colour settings right it's perfectly visible in almost all lighting.

I converted a desktop 10.4" TFT, but managed to blow the controller through stupidity.

I've bought a Dr Berghaus controller, but I'm having a few probs since. Hopefully, now I've got everything fixed up, I can pull the PC and check the refresh rates etc, see if that is the problem. I get the Bios screen OK, but after that everything else goes black, and I can't even get into the bios.

10.4@640x480 is perfect. If I hadn't widened the centre console specifically to take the 10.4" I would probably have gine for a liliput 8" (not the 7.4 Widescreen).

how much roughly would it cost to whack a car pc together?

Anything from about £400-600 including a touch screen, upto as much as any decent Car sound system can cost.

Best budget way is a Liliput VGA TFT. A Mini-itx motherboard (M10000, MII 10000, or MII 12000).

1 decent sized 3.5" HDD or 2.5" laptop HDD with a converter. about 256-512meg ram a laptop DVD player. A reasonable headunit with AUX in (most Blaupunkts can do it with a simple cable). one of the Cubid cases that you can hide under/behind the seat A mini keyboard. a 150watt Opus bare board PSU (direct regulated DC input, no need for an inverter)

you could ditch the headunit, and use an AMP connect the motherboard straight to the amp, or get a DSP and and use the digital 5.1 out from the motherboard to an AMP rack.

Getting much easier Most of the stuff you need is now available from linitx.com or cartft.com with UK/EU duty already paid.

And they both deliver really quickly. If you have multiple din slots and some deep empty space behind the dash you could even look at the Traveller single din cases, and fit it on board, although you need some pretty expensive very low profile memory to get a slim DVD player in.

hmmm not bad, seriously considering the idea, my mk1 is to crap and the car comp would be worth more than the car but be a good project for the MKII MR2 turbo i have my eye's on. think there double din too

comp would be worth more

think there double din

If there is a double din, a 7" widesceen VGA TFT will slot straight in.

If you were clever you could make a double din sized box in Aluminium with the screen case bolted to the front, or even hinged to the front, so that you could have the DVD behind it.

Remember my Saab is a £300 special, the PC probabley cost more than that, even though I used old bits to do it on the cheap.

Mine now officially appears to be deceased. I think a bad 12v rail in the PSU was giving out over 14v and has fried the HDD.

Bastard.

Just tried it. I think i like it.

Will need to get the screen going again, but it is definatley a cool bit of kit.
