Engine Building Career

Hi all,

Hopefully this post will catch the eye of some well established engine builders, whether working for large companies or privately under their own name.

Basically I want to know what course of action I need to pursue to get into this world. I am currently working, as I have for the past 6 years, as a design engineer so I have the technical background, and of course I also have a keen interest in workign with engines, as I do regularly in my own garage.

I am planning on going to university this coming Sept (05) to study either Automotive engineering and design or Motorsport engineering and design. Plus any experience I can gether myself by reading and fiddling in the garage.

Any advise or "how I got where I am" stories would be so appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Jon Reynolds

If you've not already done it, get an engine from a scrappy and rebuild it. Start with something simple - say an OHV Ford or BMC engine, which should be able to be sold without loss after overhaul. Then go on to more complicated OHC and multi-valve designs.

If you were to choose something like an A-Series, a genuine factory workshop manual covering the procedure would be easy enough to get.

TBH i'd do the same.

Buy something like a XR3i engine I find early ford engines a doddle to work on.

take it to bit and put it back together again.

Early Vee-Dub engines are nice and simple too.

hi guys, thanks for the replies, but i think u maybe misunderstood...

i have worked a fair bit on the car, rebuilt the engine both bottom end and cylinder head completely....i have what i like to consider a reasonably good understanding of how everything works.

what i want to do is turn my interest and engineering career as it is so far into a career in the motorsport industry...whether it be with a big high ranking motorsport company or a smaller amateur/semi pro type company building engines to customers requirements.

is the right route for me to take going thru uni and getting a degree in something like motorsport deisgn and engineering or trying to find a company that will take me on and train me up...the latter being difficult i would imagine. plus i dont really want to start at the bottom sweeping floors as i am already 25, have been working as a design engineer designing mechanics for projectors/cameras etc...

i just want to make my future in the engine development industry...its just getting in there i am not sure how to do.

cheers

Is sir suggesting a place on the retro-renault moderating team is not fulfillment enough? :-|

I don't know that much about it, but I can't see a designer actually doing the engine building in anything other than a tiny company. They would use trained mechanics for that.

well engine development and design isnt really a dogsbody job....i think it takes a lot of engnieering design and skill...the skills i hope to improve on...
