Better? Nah I disagree. It's different. Depending on the 1.6 in question, it's not much quicker either.

Eh? The only reason the 1.9 isnt that much faster is because the gearing is different to the 1.6 to take advantage of the extra torque. Couple the 1.9 engine to a 1.6 gearbox and its *much* quicker.

No, with the 1.6, it's just better. It's faster all through the range.

I have no idea what that is :D But I'll try and convince my mates dad to go in his R1 powered thing I posted pictures of.

I'd say he has the right idea with the 1.6, they tend to be in better condition for some strange reason. The 1.6 is also a nice short stroke so revs well. IIRC they were both 83mm bore so that would make the 1.6 a 73-74mm stroke and the 1.9 around 87-88mm. So the question is one of torque or revs, all else being equal the 1.6 should be good for more revs (the piston is moving more slowly at a given rpm) before grenading it's self, the early 1.6 had smaller valves than the later ones that were the same heads as the 1.9s I think so cams shouldn't be a problems if you want them. The 1.9 only ever really made about 8bhp more (but more torque) rather than the 15bhp Peugeot claimed.

The early non cat ones were the full 15bhp extra at 130bhp IIRC. Once they were cat equiped they came down to 122bhp.

Personally I'd take a 309 Goodwood Mi16 over both over them :)
