Golf GTi 1.8t

What are these cars like to modify? Like the Golfs but they are a tad slow performance wise. Does this car use the same engine as the Audi TT 225BHP? What extra power can be gained by superchipping the car? Hybrid Turbo etc etc.. Anyone point me in the direction of a specialist tuner? Thanks.

Get on clubgti.com/forum. There's a table on there somewhere detailing all the 1.8T engine codes. The 225s tend to have different turbos and sometimes forged pistons. All are chippable, just to different power levels, all share the same block IIRC.

Forged crankshaft as well on the 225bhp version, I think.

But it's only a matter of time before someone pops up and says "Don't bother - the Focus is a much better drive" :-)

Lots of tuners about. AMD and BBR, Stealth, Awesome GTi (I suspect Awesome are full of s**te mind).

For the same money though, you can't get an Focus to go any near as quickly as a £4k Golf 1.8T with a chip.

And it's got the wrong badge on it :). OTOH the only time I'll have a 1.8t is if it's in a MK2.

I'd have a 1.8T Golf over a similarily priced Focus tho. They're not even into ST170 money.

WTF?

You couldn't even get a ST170 for the same price is what I meant, and they're still slow :-)

I understood. I'm just amazed :D.

Well that money would probably only get me a crappy Focus wouldn't it? And a chipped Golf would be quite fun. Of course, I haven't actually checked and aren't actually going to get either ever, so it's a bit of a moot point :-)

quite like them myself guy at work has one tidy car, should have got one! didn't someone get 500bhp out of one?

Dahlback got 550. They also run a 1000 horsepower Golf with full ur quattro running gear on the 5cyl engine. 350ish is regularly claimed in the Golf mags, but I suspect bullshit.

If you don't like twisty stuff, roundabouts or for that matter, junctions.

Good motorway cars. Appalling on B-roads. Not really what a GTI is all about though.

Some nutters raced a 500bhp one in the British GT Championship IIRC.

350bhp isn't that much to an engine like that, the only reason most stop at 350bhp is after this you need to open the engine up and change the rods and pistons for reliability.

Never driven one to be fair. Nothing that can't be helped by some wide tyres and suspension tinkerage though I suspect. And you're not being objective, because you love all things Ford and hate all things VW :-)

To be honest, they're not a GTI in the sense that a MkII or Pug 205 is a GTI, but they're as good as any other modern day GTI, except maybe the Civic Type R. I'd have more fun in an Alfa 147 2lt TSpark, but for something you want to do thousands of miles a year in, the Golf would be a better long-term ownership proposition.

Yea, and I'd imagine when fettled to the 200bhp mark, they're probably resonably entertaining. Although if we're going down the cheap hot hatch route, a Clio Sport has to be bloody tempting... Although not in the same class as the Golf, it fits with the 205 GTi...
