If the road's twisty enough and going flat out causes brake fade, the car needs better brakes IMO :). I'm talking twisty lane with hedges either side, so corners mean slowing down...

So why are you going flat out?

Go to a track day where you can do it properly. The road's not the place for flat out driving, more so when you can't see hazards until you're on top of them. :(

Yes, that would be me, then (although ours uses ABS). Many older models use solid discs up front, which in standard guise fade quite badly when you're driving it hard. Later ones use vented discs, which are _much_ better. To be fair, it's also how it's driven. I've only ever encountered fade with ours when deliberately and wilfully pushing it harder and harder until I got fade. The ones I've driven with solid discs haven't started smelling and smoking on a favourite road with some firm braking, either.

And some have ABS, too. Most models with ABS have vented front discs, but some have solid discs.

Of course, for almost all Ka drivers, the solid disc brake set up is absolutely perfect - when you consider the car's target driver this isn't difficult to appreciate. Once you start driving a car hard, nay very hard, you're going to find flaws, and it just so happens that the Ka is a small car with low power that happens to grip and handle very well, rather than a larger car with more power and happens to handle well.

Doki's been advised to slow down, screw the nut, uprate the discs, so on and so forth many times... :)

Did I say that? Twisty lane with hedges = slowing down for corners so that you don't drive into the bloke in a tractor on the other side of it. That doesn't mean you can't put your toe down between corners.

Any ideas on what sort of bike I should get? Bear in mind I've not ridden a bike since I was a kid and fancy having a ride around in the woods etc. not entering competitions to see who can die the quickest :).

Mountain bike disc brakes and calipers cost even more than car ones.

I know, that's why my San Andreas is still running 1998 V brakes with Kool-stop pads, rather than getting a wheel rebuild, and converting to disc hubs.
