How realistic would a 924 be?

Yeah yeah not a proper Porsche, whatever, like - am I bothered?

I guess half the battle is finding a decent Porsche specialist?

Why?

Just drop it into your local VAG van workshop ;-)

Hehehehe. That aspect I like. Along with rear wheel drive. Is the 2.5 litre a van one too, just out of interest...?

No, the 2.5 is a proper Porker engine and to be avoided at all costs if you're trying to run it on a budget.

Some of the parts prices can be shocking and there's some significantly unobtanium bits.

Having said that, buy a sub-£1k banger in decent nick with MOT and run it 'till it breaks, then they make sense.

Don't fall for paying silly money for a really nice one, though, 'cos if you don't keep it that way then it'll be worth about 10p in a year or two's time.

The 2L lump is basically the same as that fitted in the old Audi 100, as well as vans. Mike.

my mum has two 924 2.0 and she loves em, but what does she know..

they are great fun, mechanically identical to 944 etc modifying can be easy and rewarding.

They're very robust indeed - I've had two.

However, if you buy a cheapy, it will feel very baggy indeed. I'm glad I did it (twice) but wouldn't again. (unless it was an S of course).

Actually, they're old - half the battle is finding a decent car.

924 vs. 924S values are now close for decent cars; i.e. only a grand or two between them. The 924S is MUCH better.

Maintaining them? Porsche specialist for the cambelt and repairs, any decent backstreet mechanic for brakes, suspension and so forth. They are not complex.

interiors are craggy, some aspects of the design are poor such as the bulkhead.

Bollocks. Mine had done over 120K and I knew of several with 160K+ on. They're also not terrible on fuel.

Only 150/160bhp, so not much to crow about ultimately.

Cambelt changes are essential and expensive. That's it though, the rest is dead simple.

Hmm, a 944 is not that close to a standard 924. Suspension, gearbox, engine, brakes... all different. Shell is largely the same. Interiors are different.

924S is a hybrid of the original 944 and 924.

begging for a 20v turbo 5 pot.

The Porsche specialist is the easy part.

924's are becoming old and battered, ill maintained, used to the bone. Interior is not up to it.

Better and easier will be a 944, more engine-choice too.

Welcome as a P-driver.

So what you're saying is he needs a Fiat Coupe?! Not a bad shout, but it's not a Porsche. Actually, come to think of it, he's obviously not that fussed about it being a Porsche or not....
