i read a magazine test years back, splitfires iirc being horribly expensive, but giving the largest power increase. *lol*

Probably too late now, but NGK have a happy property that they run across a temperature or two compared to the rest, e.g. Bosch, Champion and whatnot.

This means you can run them fine even when you're out a grade, without them oiling up, and so on. Wider range, essentially.

Power increase ? From a spark plug ? Er ?

The plug ignites the mixture. The end. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the car's power output - as long as it's igniting the mixture properly every time, then it's doing it's job with 100% effectiveness.

Everytime the plug fires, it burns off a teeny amount of the electrode - so over time, the electrode gets shorter, the gap gets bigger, and the plug slowly dies. Platinum plugs last longer than normal plugs, simply cos the platinum electrode is harder and less of it is burnt off on each fire.

Splitfire plugs are designed to last longer than normal plugs. They carry a pair of electrodes - but only one of them (the longest of the two) will fire on each ignition. As that slowly wears away, there'll come a point where the other electrode is now longer - so that one will start to fire instead. And repeat. In theory, you'll get upto twice as long a service life, cos there's upto twice as much electrode to burn away. Whichever electrode is not firing on each ignition, is actually getting in the way of the igniting mixture, so you don't get quite as good a burn as with a single electrode plug - so the best case scenario is that you don't

*lose* any power. You can't possibly gain any !!!!
