I currently have around 20 days of solid listening on my iPod.
Sometimes I still can't find something I want to listen to.

Can with the MP3 cd player :-)
I've actually been looking on ebay at the outlet seller account of a=20 well know shopping park catalogue shop that they shift their end of=20 stock and refurb items.
They have refurb 80gig classics that look to finish arround the =A3120=20 mark. And with that they get a normal 1 year warrenty after apple=20 factory refurb.

Yup, you can use winamp these days to drag stuff onto the iPod. You can probably get dozens of freeware things to let you drag+drop too - you are definitely not alone in detesting the almighty-ball-sucking iTunes. And don't even get me started on iPhoto.... mutter mumble grumble, &c..
Are you ripping to riff or something? For use in the car, there is simply no point in encoding at higher than 160kbps, at which 8GB equates to nearly 120 hours of music, or roughly 100CDs.
If you use the player as a Hi-Fi component as well, then you can argue that it's worth encoding at up to 320kbps, but I personally have never been able to tell the difference at anything over 192kbps.
In the end I bought an adaptor/splitter for my phone and installed mortplayer from sto-hellit.de. It will still do calls through my bluetooth, and pause the music to the player when a call comes through.
The splitter lets you use the USB connection as a standard headphone/aux jack and plug in a USB car charger, instead of only being able to use either the a car charger or a data cable or USB headphones.
So far I have the whole of the UK tomtom map, 4 albums, one 150 track mix folder (on random shuffle), plus all my photos/phone vids and the crap I transfer to the phone for installing. And I still have 1.5 gig left. Plenty for now I reckon
