If you're smart you can buy in a nice area which is near enough to a crappy area to drag the prices down, and in many areas prices are low because some major employer(s) have closed down in the preceding decade. I'm not saying that you're going to get a nice view of the dales for £50k, but for three time that you might, and there's delivery work needed everywhere.
But not at the minute - applications are flying through at record speed 'cos of low turnover. Still, you'd be mental to buy without doing most of the searches, and the mortgage lenders have suddenly gone off mental people...
As I understand it, the HIP should cover the searches.
