Just out of interest, I'm supposing you're running on Tesco's 99 RON stuff by default. Have you tried a lesser RON superunleaded alternative by any chance? Or Shell's V-Power?

I ask because my Saab has a love / hate relationship with Tesco 99 RON. Loves the extra octane from a performance perspective, but isn't as economical. I put this down to the bioethanol stuff that's used to increase the RON rating as having a lower calorific value than proper petrol.

Not sure if the 3p extra for Excellium is worth it over Tesco just yet...

We haven't got excellium round here yet.

When I got it, it needed filling and there closest place on the way home=20 was a BP so I gave it a tank of Ultimate at =A31.20 a litre when Tesco was= =20 =A31.11 for 99.

I haven't tried V-Power yet either. Ultimate did seem to last quite=20 well.

The 99 seems to have improved. Over the last few weeks I have gotten the=20 average up from 25-27 to just shy of 30 (will pass 30 this week) even=20 with the injection gearbox and somedays an average motorway speed of=20

22mph.

For between 1/3-1/2 a tank I'm getting 220-250 mixed miles. And inside =20 the flap it does say 98ron minimum.

Really? I put it down to you using the extra performance...

Riiight - if it's 98 minimum, that means just Optimax*, V-Power and Tesco 99 Super, then. Or I suppose buying an octane booster...

Pity it isn't 97 RON minimum.

*Optimax now being replaced with V-Power.

Perhaps! :-) It pulls better at both ends of the 2,000 to 4,500 rpm torque band. But then most of the time that poor donk is sitting at ~2,000 rpm in top.

I'll have a better idea in due course, like, three years or so...

Yours is an LPT so it will be fine on 95, but should adapt to 98 fine.

Gah should have said. It could also be that winter grades of fuel are being phased out for the summer stuff. The proper summer stuff is reputed to only be supplied for a one to two week window in August...

Yup; it'll run on 91+, pretty much. I'm surprised that running it on higher octane stuff makes much of a difference, because it's hardly stressed. I seem to recall it's something weany like 0.35 bar.

Now, if I were to have the Hirsch upgrade, it'd very much prefer superunleaded...

Remember, my catless 1984 900 also had the same sticker. It also had the greem petrol cap which indicated unleaded petrol.

I bet you have special oxygen-free unidirectional hifi cables and wax your car with ear wax extracted from Nepalese virgins, too....

Cant be because if it was then it would run weak and bugger peoples motors.

Umm, my '90 says 91RON minimum, preferred 97/8ish...

I suspect somebody's swapped that.

Mine said recommended 98ron on the sticker, but because of the APC it said in the book as low as 91 in an emergency.

Or, arguably, who gives a toss.

I know I was a bit obsessive on the two occasions when I got to choose a leased car, but really - it doesn't matter, does it ?

When the list was, like 15 cars, with some quite desireable kit on there, it was tough.

Now it's not so tough, with 3 dull choices.

However, spending the cash is proving to be problematic. So many cars to choose from.

I've been in that position twice - first time (N-reg) was a straight choice between Mundaneo, Vectra, Golf GL or Rover 400. No-brainer.

Second time was an open choice based on lease money - the shortlist came down to 155 or A4.

I rolled the Rover six months after getting it, then changed jobs before it came back - and only had the Alfa for about four months before changing jobs again...

No more exciting and just as few people give a toss.

Plus and don't forget, I don't care what people think about the fuel I stick in the 9-3, whereas you seem to care more about impressing Usenet than listening to our ideas.

So meh.

Can't use bioethanol, or can't have a lower calorific value, both, or something else?
