They don't cost much to repair though. It's the front and rear cross members that cost unless you accept a partial repair by having a sleeve welded over the chassis on three sides only. It's a strong repair but nowhere near as strong as the original box section.

I do think you are wrong about the off-road capabilities of the Cherokee though, it is very capable. The only Land Rover Defender I've been in didn't have enough legroom, so there was no chance of taking it off road, and the only discovery I've been a passenger in is my aunty's, and me and my cousin took it on the Eastnor castle course. The centre diff broke or something. It was expensive anyway. However, I know that this is probably just an anomaly, and I wouldn't judge the capability of all discoveries on that one.
I think maybe you may have had a s***ty Cherokee in a similar situation? The one we had on the ranch was great. Coped very well with off-road conditions.
I find all this Land Rover / other 4WD brand rivalry a bit odd to be honest. I mean, there's a distinct lack of Land Rover work vehicles in N. America, and I'm sure Fraser can tell us all how Land Rover faired once the Japanese off-roaders got into Australia.

You previously said something to the effect that jeeps are crap, I was simply offering a different view, with a suggestion that maybe your experiences with jeeps were like mine with Land Rovers, and capped off my post with an observation.

Their crapulence is profound[1]. Hence why they tend to cluster around the bottom of the JD Power survey with other crap like the Merc ML and every French car ever made.
[1] Absolutely nasty interiors. S**te old engines which break, often. Ergonomics designed by shotgun. Ludicrous servicing costs. Dealers who really don't have a clue/give a f*ck. Materials that wear out incredibly quickly. Pointlessly faffy transmissions. Useless ground clearance. And no load carrying capability to speak of. There's a spare wheel taking up most of the boot and the Commander is even more of a joke with it's choice of take a couple of suitcases, or take a couple more people and one pair of Wellingtons. But watch out if you do put anything in the back because some plank lined the rear of the boot with a step made of nasty, cheap, brittle plastic that shatters if you drop a bag on it. Painted plastic interiors (in vile colours) that scratch and rub through within a few hundred, let alone thousand, miles.
