Aie I did, unfortunately I was stuck behind a Civic using his brakes a lot.

Too quick for first, too slow for second, and some overtaking opportunities, in which git accelerated away too, once he figured out what I was contemplating.

opportunities,

Justr thinking about that last statment. if you were going down a hill in first (well any gear really) and it was so steep the weight of the car was overcoming the inertia of the engine/transmisson so the car was accelerating down, would the engine rev indefinately? A rev limiter would normally cut of the fuel, but it wouldnt be the combustion causing the engine to over rev, it'd be the wheels turning.

Just curious and bored

And in other news DervMan is quoted as saying:

The irish amongst us wouldn't have seen the humour in that ;)

You want a real challenge then check out the Plymouth Dakar Challenge (

) where the only rules are that thecar should not cost more than £100 and no more than £15 is to be spenton getting it ready for the rally. Or its junior brother Staples to Naples with similar rules but only lasting a long weekend. (

I *really* like the idea of the Naples trip. Anyone else on here up for it?

And in other news Carl Gibbs is quoted as saying:

Kinda the same thing, the brother stuck his mk2 golf 16v into 3rd at full revs in 4th (110-120ish?) The clutch just roasted. He said it made a loud noise and he remembers the trottle and clutch pedal droppin to the floor, dunno how or why.

Synchro Volks transporters........

I did the same thing in a '91 Rover 414 a few years back. I've not yet been able to explain what happened after that though. When the clutch engaged in

3rd, the rev counter shot off the end of the dial and I quickly buried the clutch pedal again when I realised what happened. Stuck it in 5th and pulled the clutch up again, but there was no drive - the engine just revved up and down with the throttle as if it was in neutral. Suspecting I'd killed the clutch or something, I pulled up at the side of the road for a couple of minutes. Tried to get the car moving again, and it went fine, although the clutch bite point was very vague. The clutch got better and better as I drove, and after a few miles it was completely back to normal. Strange.

If you do it again cut through the borders. It's a shorter distance and the roads are quite fun.

Sounds pretty cool :) Any ideas on a s*it banger costing 100 quid that's likely to make it? Preferably with a larg-ish en gine for those hilly parts!

did it in my cossie

120 odd in 4th went to put it into 5th but found 3rd instead the rev counter needle got stuck next to the plastic portion for the fuel gauge and I bent a rod :(

I'm just curious as to how exactly we get rid of the cars in Naples though (if you read through it says the plan is to get a flight back). I can just imagine about 20-30 UK registered bangers being all dumped on a road in the city centre, and their owners (well, former owners) getting on a bus to the airport!!!

Just looking on autotrader I just found this

Bugger that it's £275 and so over the price bracket. Perhaps with some haggling LOL :)

Nah, just get a £100 205 or summet, it'll be well funny :)

Once got a 1.0 12v corsa up to 90 then dumped it into 2nd (yeaahhhhh) lovely noise, didn't blow up, so did it a few more times....

And then they told you you'd failed your driving test? :P

accelerating

Never had that happen - you'd need a very long, *VERY* steep hill ! Even down Sutton Bank, I manage just fine in 2nd gear (both the 405 and the TI) without the brakes.

Think what happens when you get your brakes stupid-hot. You get brake-fade. Same thing happened to your clutch, and you probably glazed the surface too. As it cooled down, and deglazed itself, it returned to normal.
