Reducing car noise level

OK, quick question. I booked a track day and am planning to use my dad's Caterham. Anyway, the noise limit is 98 dB, so we took the car down the other week and they measured it at 98 !! Now this could just be a fluke, and it's possible that on the day it will measure 99 or higher and fail, then I'd have to use my Pug which won't be much fun.

Also, the first time I did the noise check, I went over the 3/4 rev line and then backed off the throttle, which then made the engine "pop" and sent it over 100 db :-) Have to practise getting to 4500 rpm without going over!

So, are there any quick-and-dirty methods of reducing the volume of the exhaust a dB or two without affecting performance too much? It's a Ford

1600 Kent engine if it helps. I saw a Ferrari there with some sort of exhaust extension on the back, anyone know anythign about these?

you can get a baffle from some tracks to whack in the exhaust. no idea where you can buy them though.

Same prob with 750 motor club. Advance the timing a good few degrees, to keep exhaust quiet for the test. But dont drive it hard! And yes it reads higher near walls, on concrete etc

Make sure the exhaust pipe isn't horizontal at the exit, it needs to be pointing at 45 degrees to the ground, it made a big difference with my car at SVA (same engine).

Ah good point, from what I remember it's actually only about 10-20 degrees from horizontal at the moment. I guess it will make a difference because of less sound being reflected from the ground.

Thanks for the other suggestions too guys, definitely some things to try. Now I just have to play Goodwood some more on the PC to learn the track ;-)
