S13 Boost limit

Anyone know the standard boost of an S13 200SX and the max safe boost to run on a standard engine?

I'm away this w/e.

With standard T25 turbo CA18DET stock boost is 10-11psi at anything over 3000 rpm.

With inlet filter kit and exhaust (mongoose, blue flame, etc by collins perfromance +2psi by itself) boost can be wound up using a boost control valve to about 15psi, it will fall off at high rpm.. Anything over 190bhp will give fuel cut so it needs an HD chip or boost limiting to 13psi (what you get without the BCV) to prevent cut. Produces about 210bhp with stg 1 HD chip.

A SAAB or Volvo FMIC will gain 2psi of boost without BCV gives about

210bhp with exhaust and HD stg 1 chip. Up to 235bhp with BCV and boost up to 17psi but it's on the limit of the turbo so it will fall off lots at top end. About the upper limit for auto boxes. Needs an up-rated clutch to exceed 240bhp.

Put a T28 on @16psi (or T28 hybrid @14psi as step on way to stg3) will get about 270bhp and will need a HD stg 2 chip.

Stock internals will take about 330bhp which needs at least a T28 hybrid to achieve @17psi. In addition to all the stg1 bits it needs

440cc injectors, Z32 AFM and HD stage 3 chip. Some people (Norris Designs) claim 350bhp is safe before they specify a fast road engine which has internal mods. Some people (mad Sweedish) have done dyno runs at 375bhp on stock internals but it's considered risky and thought to be short lived. Gearbox strips 3rd at a bit over 400bhp so that needs a £2.5K OS Giken gear set or similar, will also need a very good clutch.

New heavy duty mains and big ends are recommended before tuning engine as a precaution, stock ones DO fail, you fix it and get on with it but it's so much better to avoid the crank re-grind and do them before they fail. Oil pressure and temp gauges are as vital as a boost gauge before tuning an engine. A dump valve does nothing for performance but with boost in excess of 13-14psi and removal of restrictive wing mount intercooler it may be useful to prevent possibility of turbo damage.

Before any tuning is done 280mm 4 pot 300ZX or later S14 brakes should be fitted. Coil overs are a nice to have as well. The rear does not have enough adjustment and the front no adjustment so adjustable camber kits are needed if lowering. Then you need some uprated ARBs and a load of poly bushes. And of course the set of 17" wheels and tyres.

HD stg 1, 2 and 3 chips.

Great reply! Defo one to cut-out-and-keep :)

I wouldn't go over a bar without an intercooler upgrade at the very minimum. The injectors/fuel pump run out of fuel delivery pretty early too. And most S13s are fairly old as well now.

And you can use a Saab 9000 intercooler, or a volvo 240/740 or 940/60 instead too.

I've heard the Saab one is the best fit in a 200SX.
