0 days. You get one by automation from DVLA.
You get a reminder about 3 weeks before its due. If you've a new computerised MOT, you can buy online. If you're not going to be there, anyone can tax the vehicle for you in your absence if you give them the V5, MOT and Insurance Cert. There's no excuse.
A second.
mine was out of date for about a week but i avoided using it, only cause i was a muppet and lost me insurance certificate :)
Mr Plod does not really bother about tax now so much, you get automated fines sent to you now when you fail to tax your car.
Usually around 2 months before you get to the first stage, which is a automated fine, after that it's anyones guess.
Technically no time at all, but in practice, DVLA seem to have their usual razor-sharp efficiency focused on this one so your biggest threat is plod spotting it on a roadside.
Personally, I wouldn't take the risk, you can't save money to make it worth doing and it's really all about forgetting to do the paperwork on time. And they might suddenly get the computerized records up to date...
Depends how bored Mr Plod is :-) Its an offence not to display tax also, whether you have it or not.
