Volvo 850 T5

defo get a T5 i considered the V70 T5 when buying the BM but they either had silly millege or were a bit tacky. although i can get insured on one for 150-200 quid less than the BM costs me!

we get them at work now and the the V70 T5's and the odd C70 coupe T5's too might add them to my cars to consider list :)

Why?

very sensitive to differing rotational speeds on the wheels.

What's that got to do with punctures?

*sigh* Jesus dude you don't do yourself any favours...

The tyres all have to be equally worn, so as they're the same size. If one tyre gets a puncture, and you replace it, and not the other 3 as well, it will be slightly bigger than them - thus causing the diffs to throw a fit.

If you have to replace a tyre you have to replace all 4 to maintain the same rolling radius. Also gotta keep them tyre pressures right.

Which is why its a very bad idea to buy an AWD from Ebay etc where you cannot visually check the tyres and have a testdrive to listen for the graunching from the busted transfer gears set!!

I think this might lead to some sort of pedantic comment about how simply getting a puncture doesn't mean that you need to replace a tyre.

After all, ThePunisher's mate's LS1 engined Lamborghini Countach is technically a hot hatch.

Volvo engineers must build to amazing tolerances if a few milimeters in tyre differance can destroy a diff. I wonder how all those othe cars and 4x4s cope?

What a complete load of bollox.

Cavaliers don't either

Cope? or mind the slight difference in tyre size?

Reply to

Maybe you should go and read up on the old Volvo AWD systems before thinking you know everything

I do know that there's no AWD that badly designed, that will destroy diffs, over a few millimeters difference in tyre size.

Cavaliers don't cope either. Transfer boxes don't like difference in tyres treads.

It's another well known fact.

They don't just implode, it causes them to wear out quickly. Just go and google it. Or better still look on the Volvo Owners Club forums there's bound to be info about it on there!

Indeed it is.

Ever wonder why there aren't many Cavalier GSi 4x4s left? or Cavalier Turbos... it's because the transfer box is made of cheese.

Shame really. About the only Cavaliers I ever liked and they're all pretty much dead.

I not saying it doesn't happen, I just don't belive for one minute that it's to do with different tyre sizes and rotation speed, if it was, the cars wouldn't be able to corner without the diffs wearing. Bad design is to blame.

Yes you are, you've said it 2 or 3 times so far, you even left one of them in.

Its not so much the diffs, its the transfer gear set and the viscious coupling that buggers.

Like the mk1 freelander, the V70 awds *must* have all four tyres the same.
