VW Scirocco - what do you think?

I've seen this car around locally:

The reserve was £250 - I know it's ended but I've been in touch.

Any suggestions?

David

I'm glad we cleared that up.

I think you're having trouble with pasting links, or have forgotten about binary newsgroups ;)

They rust around the sills, the clutch cable can pop out of the bulkhead tearing the metal and reinforcing ring. As long as that's alright and the engine is behaving, nice cars.

Richard

Nope - I hit post before pasting the link and typing something.

David

Not sure, but the body kit might have been painted. I like sciroccos, but I'd rip those wheels off and put a standard black bodykit on it. Should shift alright, a few GTi bits fit.

The dash problem could be solvable just by pulling and replacing the fuse that runs the clocks - if you flatten the battery and jump start it, or put a new battery in, the clocks can go a bit nuts.

Thanks - he's relisting it but I'm seeing the car on Wednesday.

Thanks - he's relisting it, but I'm seeing the car on Wednesday when I'll look at the sills and bulkhead.

David

Scala should be body colour, can't remember what colour the wheels should be because I've only closely looked at a white Scala which had white wheels as well. I'm guessing Scala wheels on a red should be silver, but VW have no taste, so red is possible.

Or it could be a wiring issue with the ECU if it's the revcounter...

Richard

Aye. Could be something expensive, could be something free...

Thanks - it looks like the Volvo and the Merc estates will be gone (one sold on eBay the other with a bid) so I'll be carless unless I'm not careful. And I need transport.

I'm seeing the Scirocco on Wednesday so I'll bear the advice in mind. However, the owner has used a VAG mechanic and therefore it'll be more likely to be the ECU.

David

Well, I wouldn't worry about it myself as long as the car is running alright. I don't know what injection Sciroccos use - if it follows Golf patterns that car will have Digifant, so should have a knock sensor (but on a J, probably no cat) and several possible ways that it could be picking up RPM for engine management. They might even still take the dash RPM from the coil for all I know!

The factory mod was a plate on the bulkhead, easy to check if it's there, easy to fit if not.

Check the wheel bearings and shocks, check for emulsion in the rocker cover as the oil coolers tend to go, check the fuel tank as they tend to rust round the filler and a PITA to replace.

Probably more but that is a starter for ten, have you had a insurance quote, that is the reason why there are so many cheap Sciroccos's about.

Is this a large plate? Presumably later cars have it, the most recent I've had was a D-plate GT-S and it didn't.

Mmm, I'd forgotten the oil cooler. Rear wheel bearings are 'adjustable', IIRC, in that they can be slack.

David's just come from a Mercedes 300TE - I'd be really surprised if a Scirocco caused any headaches.

Richard (I wish I wasn't limiting the number of cars at the moment, I'd like a cheap, late-plate injected Scirocco).

No, all it does is where they converted the shell to RHD the bulkhead was not thick enough do support the strain of the clutch cable, so all it is is a spreader plate.

Tapered bearings, you can adjust them up tho better replaced, on my last one the bearing was so shot it took out the stub axle.

That reminds me, the self adjusters on the read drums tend to seize and the brakes will be s**te, they may have tried to adjust them by tightening the hand brake cables hence the break.

Wait and see, they are extortionate to insure.

Nice and quick, corner well, s**te brakes.

Yeah, I have had one ;)

FWIW I had mine when I was

Don't know for sure, but it can adjust for octane. Which I think is usually done with a knock sensor? (I just googled. Yes, Digifant has a knock sensor).

Richard

Thanks Geoff.

And yes, a 300TE is group 16 so a Scirocco is a bit cheaper.
