weight saving

well with the 205's imminent repair, and a bx possibly arriving soon(doug check your e-mail and get in touch)

i've been thinking about taking some weight out of the poor thing

the standard car with a full tank o fuel and all fluids topped up weighs in at 889kg's.

ideally i want to knock 150kg off that :)

now i know that sounds optimistic, BUT i've been doing a bit of research,

confirmed weights are heater assembly at 11kg replacing the tailgate with a fibreglass item yields a 10.5 kg saving bonnet a mere 4.6kg standard rims weigh 9.6 kg each so hoping to half that (x4) one of the 205gti drivers forum boys removed all underlay and sound proofing which saved 22kg and say allow another 20 for trim panels back seat and fixtures/fittings

so thats let me see

heater assy 11kg tailgate 10.5kg bonnett 4.6kg rims 15kg(all round) soundproof 22kg interior 15kg

now theres 80 kg give or take, and i aint even started on perspex windows

looking at 4mm polycarbonate.

savings quoted are 2.3kg per side on the front side windows and 0.7kg per side on the rear side windows, binning leccy windows saves 3kg a side too :)

theres another 12 kilos

so far so good 90 kilos for not a couple of pieces of fibreglass and some perspex currently waiting to hear back on a plastic fuel tank too which should be worth a good 15-20 kg saving,

any thoughts on getting the poor pug into anorexia stakes?

Not worth the hassle. If you remove all those bits you'll soon hate driving it.

If it becomes a project trackday car, it won't matter too much. Just need to be drivable to the nearest MOT garage each year, and trailerd behind the BX to tracks.

How's he going to do that.... the BX is giving up it's engine to get the

205 running.

Given the cost of track days, it's unlikely many people would do more than a handful every year, if that, so it's likely to be used on the road more often than not..... there's a lot to be said for leaving it as standard as possible so it's still civilised enough to make it an attractive road car.

Ah yeah, forgot the essential need for an engine.

no no no,

the 205 is being fixed early next week with a bit of magic and visa abuse, the bx is being bought (hopefully) as a day to day car, and is going on the road,

the 205 will be trailerd by said audi derv barge.

what you mean i'll hate driving it like that? sheez like its going to make it any more reliable, 28 miles in 37 days and 5 recovery trucks, even the bx cant be that bad

The point is that removing heating and ventillation and ripping out trim / soundproofing is going to make it quite an unpleasant car to drive anywhere other than on a track.

nah the sheer exhileration of being in a 205 that moves more than makes up for any discomfort

Learn how to fix a car before doing all that. Walk before you can run and all that - or learn what to look for when buying a car so you don't buy junk all the time - there are plenty of free online guides. At a push you could call the RAC and have someone inspect for you. The cost of inspection would save the cost in parts and time later. The other way to get some weight out of the car is to go on a diet.

Why bother? Just stick a turbo on it.

A turbo doesn't make it stop or corner any better.

Get some hole saws and make swiss cheese out of any non structural parts. Remove headlights if it's not going to be used on the road. You might be able to fit a smaller radiator (less water). Lighter tyres if you're going to be changing them anyway. If you're uprating the brakes then alloy callipers.

Put the flywheel in a lathe and/or mill off excess material. You wil loose 3-4 kg static mass but 50-60 rotational mass in the lower gears.

Look around for the short ratio PSA-sport gearbox, straight cut with LSD. They wine and grind but it's a hoot to drive, making you a hooligan of the road every time...

Mi16V-power in a P205 with some soft rubbers at the front and you be be in for

911 acelerattions (and faster) up to 100 MPH.

O yes: get a bucketseat on Ebay. As competion seats have a certificate which last but a few years it will be cheap, shave off about 5 -10 kg and put you in "the right mde" when driving the car ;-)

He could do that, but by far the best method of gaining extra speed on a track day / twisty road is to take some track driving lessons.

aiming for circa 200 horses per tonne :) with the 8v and hopefully a lot more once we go MI :)

currenty chucks out just over 157 bhp /tonne ********

hoping to add a bit to that and go for 190 bhp/tonne with just some simple weight saving (involves slimming the car down to 750kg (but shouldnt be too hard)

eventually once we're into MI territory i want 700kg and 260 horses per tonne :)+++++++++

compare that to

"Works" Mini cooper 126 bhp/ton Civic Type R 166 bhp/ton M3 SMG 219 bhp/ton scooby WRX 159 bhp/ton Vaux VX220 168 bhp/ton lambo galardo 330 bhp/ton pug 306 gti 6 137 bhp/ton Audi TT 157 bhp/ton pulsar 176 bhp/ton polo G40 !!! 154 bhp/ton

****** based on current gti weighing in at 889kg and putting out 140 horses(allows for wear and tear on engine and addition of headwork and longman cam.)

++++++ means i need 180 horses or in other words shiney webbers on the MI

correction quoted stock kerb weight with all fluids for mine is 850 kg (allowing for 1900 being dumped in) 889kg figure quoted is for a later model phase 2

sooo currently 164 bhp tonne.

Just one thing - you're going on about bhp/tonne with yours but all those (snipped list) you've quoted in bhp/ton. Are they all measured in bhp/ton (i.e. imperial ton) or is that just you not spelling it properly? You'd have to be comparing like with like, like.

What's the point?

If you got some track tuition you'd go a lot faster than adding 40 or so bhp.
