Well I've recently bought a LaCie 250GB USB2 hard drive. Ok, it doesn't have the advantage that it's powered from the USB socket, but at 80 quid you can't complain (7200rpm, 8MB buffer - google for Lacie Porsche to find it) - that was on special at Staples, but you can get it for similar money by shopping around online (around 90 quid delivered, incl. VAT). Nice design too, with a brushed metal finish on the front.

Some advice! Disable all write caching, and that 8mb buffer using the HD manufacturers utility. Otherwise you can unplug it and lose whole bunches of photos!

I was going to go DSLR - with a *istD (got a small amount of pentax 35mm gear already you see) but got attached to the new Panasonic (also badged leica) so got that instead. Tiny but very good.

I work for (several) photographic magazines, and have access to all sorts of industry luminaries, and technology. I've used digital cameras since the Canon Ion, and was playing with Kodak DCSs when everyone else was only just realising APS was a Very Bad Idea Really.

So - tell me what's wrong with the Foveon ;)

Hmmm, that's two people I know who considered an *istD - I'm getting one of those very soon, and have absolutely no idea what to expect from it.

The Panasonics are good.

Most disappointing thing we've seen lately is the new Ricoh 8Mp compact. Good price, excellent optics, fantastic pictures - and fragile as hell :/

Cracking camera - Pentax glass is up there with the best and I love the size and shape of the body. On my list to get one when I have spare cash - ie never...

Panasonic not too robust - the outer protection on the screen has cracked. Photos are ace and shooting in raw leaves so many possibilities in the digital darkroom.

*Nothing* - I *hate* bayer arrays and I would sell important bits of my anatomy for a Foveon. If you ever get bored of it, you know which direction to chuck it :-)

Sorry, I'm used to photography students telling me the SD10 is crap ;)

Have you seen the latest BJP? Nice test of recent Canon, Nikon and the SD sensors.

Sure, the SD10 is getting on a bit, and no-one really swallowed the 10Mp claims (though there is truth in the ability to interpolate), but damn - that is one sharp camera. There's a set of diamonds used, cropped right in, and the SD10 is pinsharp, pixel-sharp - the Canon is actually differentially blurred!

I found this out testing one of the high end Sigma lenses in comparison with the standard ones. The difference was astounding.

Last Focus, Sigma were selling SD10s for about £500. Wonder what they'll have for this year... I just wish there was a new one coming out.

I won't part with mine, though. I have the EF500 flash, the battery grip, 4Gb card, can usually arrange any lens I want (but have the usual pair of standard lenses) - it's built like a tank.

Richard (if there was, I couldn't tell anyone about it anyway :( ).

Oh aye? What's thier reasoning?

No, not seen that. I've only looked at the comparison tests on DPreview, and it compares favourably with the eos10D and D100, except for low-light stuff, which isn't surprising.

So it's really only 3.4MP - big deal. A 'proper' 10Mp is only 2.5Mp blue, 2.5Mp red and 5Mp green, so unless you are using green-filtered B+W you are still getting low-res interpolation artefacts, and it's no better. At least I think thats right :-)

"It's only 3.34Mp" "It's a Sigma" - even when they have Sigma lenses hanging off their cameras. Because, the Sigma lenses are a bit cheaper, I suspect.

Basically it boils down to it not having an 'image', I suspect.

Yeah. It's not so bad, but it definitely can't perform at 800ISO.

It is. Of course, the software makes a difference to what results you get, but overall - Foveon = 1 pixel, 1 true colour. Interpolate a sharp image up and sure, you have (say) 4 pixels for every one and no real increase in sharpness, but you do get a quality result without artifacts.

Just got new toys from Sandisk - 8Gb Ultra II (that's going in the iPaq loaded with MST3K eps), 1Gb Extreme III, 512Mb USB/SD card thingy, 1Gb Ultra II SD (currently also in iPaq to see if it speeds up TomTom/CoPilot. It does a bit, at least the bootup time is faster).
