Fun can be had in many ways. It doesn't always have to come form a form of transportation. Germany has a lot of mass transportation and many folks use it.
Gas is also very expensive in Germany. That's is why you don't see many 5.0 liter cars running around. The majority a 2.0 liters. Regardless of what you have heard about the Autobahn having no speed limits it isn't that true any more. There are very few sections that are balls out.
A person with children needs to be a little more pragmatic in their decisions. Non well though-out decisions are a luxury of the young. Enjoy them when you can.
