87-93 Front Brake Upgrade --> DO ASAP!!

If you own a 87-93 Stang and have NOT yet upgraded the front brakes, I URGE you to do this CHEAP MOD ASAP!!

I recently installed a pair of rebuilt 1990 Crown Vic Police Interceptor Calipers along with Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads.

The calipers from the Police Interceptors are 73mm -Vs- the stock 60mm.

I paid $15 EACH for the calipers are $30 for the PFC pads. This is a DIRECT bolt on with NO MODS required.

The difference in braking is Night and Day! I can literally stop on a dime if I want to!

This mod will ad GREAT SAFETY to your car and is well worth the $90 spent to do it!

Where did you get the calipers at? junkyard?

John Wiebalk opined in news:tIjbc.9181$pM1.5890@lakeread06:

It doesnt pay to install used brake parts... check the prices of rebuilt calipers at any part store.

It's okay to use rebuilt calipers because there's hardly anything to screw up.

If it's a high volume car, rebuilt parts are cheap as they ever were.

I think I ranted about the Mustang's brakes within weeks of buying my new '93. THEY SUCK.

Rather than swap out the calipers, I went with the Power Slot rotors and a good set of performance pads. As you say, night and day.

When I was learning to drive, someone told me that the faster you go, the faster you need to be able to stop. I think that all of us have been in situations that drive that home. The first time I had smoke pouring out of my front brakes, I decided to do a little upgrade. Well worth it.

A few years ago I upgraded to 73mm front calipers on my 90 GT. I'd also purchased a pair of slotted/cross-drilled rotors. I fantasized about the complete Saleen 4-wheel brake upgrade, but am happy with the results of what I did do. BTW.....I've often pondered changing to stainless brake lines. Pros and/or cons?

Not exactly... you're ignoring the $14 core charge per caliper, which brings the price up to $28.99 each. Unlesss you already had calipers, but I'm sure the rest of us don't. Even if you were to pick up a pair from a junkyard to use as cores, you'd have to factor that into the cost as well. The core is pretty cheap, so it'd likely be best to just pay it and be done with it, but still, that's an additional $28 to the total cost of the project.

This seems like a pretty cool modification, though I do wonder if the larger piston sizes affects the brake balance or feel negatively in any way. It does seem like normally you'd want a different master cylinder to match with those larger piston bores, but it doesn't sound like it's proving to be a problem from the way you describe it. I have a rear disc conversion on my 1991 GT, which includes a different master cylinder and some modifications to the proportioning valve but if others aren't seeing any complications with the modification in their setup then I might give it a whirl in mine to see if it improves things even further. Those stock brakes are pretty weenie.

Sounds like the exact kind of endorsement I'm looking for, especially since I have the exact same disc conversion you have. Thanks!

I think if you put the old Mustang calipers in the C/V box, it would get past most clerks doing a quick core charge return... they could even be chevy calipers and get away with that pretty easily...

Eric, I picked up another set of the 4 lug rear rotors which are in nice shape today. Get ahold of me if you are still interested in a set. I will hang onto them for you until I hear otherwise.

I don't know how much a difference it would make. I've heard it make the pedal more firm and it's easier to modulate the brakes. It couldn't hurt. I will eventually get a high end set of brakes but the SN95 swap has worked very well.

Another upgrade, for those on a budget, try installing an adjustable proportioning valve. The way the stock setup is put together the rear drums don't do hardly any work.

I believe that the replacement master cylinder that came with the kit is from a Lincoln as well. The larger calipers just bolted right up with no hassle, combined with the SSBC upgrade I consider that to be one of the best modifications I made to car.

What about the rear brakes on 79-93's, I've heard of people using bigger Fairmont wagon rear drum brakes & some have mentioned oversized brake cylinders on the rear? has anyone done this swap? what about mods to the proportion valve to get more rear brake pressure? any thoughts?

Nah, just turn in the puny OEM one's as Cores.

None that I can feel at all. :D

Yea, I'm installing a 88 TurboCoupe rear-end (w/rear discs) real soon in my car. I'm wondering if I "really" need to upgrade to Master cylinder or not ???

I'm sure the 73mm Pistoned CVPI, Mark VII, SVO calipers are ALL the SAME animal.

Although.... they "may" be priced differently due to the applications. I suggest buying the 1990 CVPI calipers.

I actually turned in a pair of 1993 CV PI calipers.

I'm sure the parts store counter monkeys would accept ANY calipers though.

Yea, my pedal is still kinda soft and was pondering going to the stainless brake lines as well. I'd like to know too!
