'93 LX 5.0 cuts out

Hi, Recently my 240K '93 LX 5.0 5 speed exhibited the following symptoms. Suddenly for a split second the motor dies along with all electricals ( radio blinks off, lights go off, tach heads to zero. Then a split second later everything fires back up as per usual. A bit unnerving especially when I'm booking onto a on ramp to merge into I95. I've checked the battery connections and the starter relay connections and all seem good. Any ideas what to try next..Thx

  1. Remove all of the plastic from around your steering column.
  2. You will see a white plug with all of your electrical wiring going into the column.
  3. Get two zip ties and connect them together and warp around the white plug.
  4. Pull them as tight as you can. Replace plastic pieces around the steering column.
  5. Start your car and enjoy your drive.

If you need a picture or two, I can snap some later this evening.

The plug becomes loose and can be replaced for approx. $12. I chose spending

10 cents instead.

Also i've had a very similar problem and found that it was the ignition switch itself that was actually coming apart between the plastic and metal pieces of it. Mike

Same thing on a '91 T-bird SC. Bought the car in Ohio and went to drive it back to PA, but as soon as I paid the man and fired it up, it started acting strange. Stopping at a notary (which ended up being closed anyway), the car wouldn't start again. Luckily, the notary was right next to a tool place and we bought a screwdriver and some wire ties. Switch came apart. I bought a new one but didn't have the tamper-proof tools, so the old one stayed. I sold the car like that, and as far as I know, it's running around somewhere near Erie, PA with the wire ties still holding the switch together...

Well, I believe (since it happened to me)that Ford had a defective ignition module and when it cuts out, it's like hitting a wall. But, your problem is different. It does sound like some kind of major intermittent short.

What ever happened to the class action lawsuit against Ford regarding ignition module failures?

It was settled. I got a $175 check from Ford about a year ago!
