if there is a recall or TSB on the defroster vent popping out of the top of the dash? They want 200.00 to replace it but I think it should be their problem, thanks

There's one for 95 - 98 Contour for air blows out of defroster ducts only...... nothing about defroster ducts blowing out of dash. Recalls are usually only safety related defects. TSBs are simply bulletins to help us from having to rediagnose common problems and rarely extend the warranty period.

This happened to my wife's '99 Mystique (same car). The dealer replaced the vent grill with some really FUGLY piece of crap, but at least he did it under warranty. (Yeah, we had the extended warranty, and, yeah, we bitched.)
It is, apparently, about as common a problem for the Contour/Mystique as a blown heater core for Mustangs.
