Gas Prices on my vacation (long and boring unless ya wanna know what I paid for gas)

I just got back from vacation on Saturday and I was kind of surprised at gas prices along the way. We left on July 30 at around 7:00 pm, filled up for

2.03 at the store next door. We stopped for gas in Bakersfield (After a ticket for 85 in a 65 at the top of the Grapevine (DUH!)) and paid 2.03. Next fill up was in Elk Grove (about 20 miles S of Sacramento) and gas was once again 2.03. Went over Donner and filled up in Reno for 2.03 (see a trend here?). Next gas stop was Winnemucca Nv, gas there was 193 per gallon for regular BUT regular there was only 85 octane!! midgrade was 2.03 and 87 octane. Last gas stop on the way was wendover Nv and we paid (gasp) 1.99 a gallon for regular 87 octane unleaded. the first time in almost 1200 miles the price was lower. I've been watching this NG for awhile now about the gas price thing and thought that since I was in socal that I would get lower prices once I got out of my home area but I never once paid more than 6 cents difference in gas anywhere on my trip. Filled up again in Heber City Utah for 2.07 a gallon and started back to San Francisco. Basically the same stops and about 1-2 cents cheaper a gallon. When I got home the gas station next door was 1.99 a gallon which matched wit the price I paid on the way back from Sacramento. all in all I/we drove 2700 miles in 8 days and spent roughly 300.00 on gas. This was in our 97 Nissan Quest with an average of 23 mpg. I would have loved to take the 'stang but at 10 miles a gallon and needing 89 octane at least it wasn't gonna happen....

.........

If the gas only would be that cheap in here.... here in Finland it costs almost 5 euros per gallon, which equals to almost six dollars (around

5.50-5.80).

I'd be quite happy to pay something like 2 dollars a gallon.

In the 80s I paid $6 per LITER in Portugal, an d in the mid 70s around $6 per LITER in Japan. Sadly, I think everyone in the USA should prepare for $4 per gallon as a norm. Which means all out food, and everything else will also go up. Hard times are looming....

I just filled up for $1.69 (southeast US). We did hit $2 a few weeks ago though.

Yes Jona,

I've been to Finland, Everything is cheaper here, Including you own Finlandia Vodka. With the taxes you pay in Finland to purchase a new Ford Mustang, is a wonder anyone there every buys one. Your Taxes are out of control, just another clear illustration of some of the costs of socialism. :-)

I can't say anything about the Fin's healthcare system, but Canada's sucks rocks. If something isn't emergent, then you will have to wait weeks, sometimes months for specialized tests.

Here in America,if you have a little initiative, then you can get a skill and get a job with health insurance.

For the month of August, Florida has done away with part of the tax. Starting on 8/1, all the pumps lost 8 cents per gallon at midnight. They'll be 8 cents under "normal" until the end of the month, when the next morning everything will be 8 cents higher. It's all supposedly for tourism.

LOL! That sounds about right.

For anyone who cares:

We just got back last week from the annual family boat vacation to the Canadian Gulf Islands. The worst price I paid was 1.20 CAD/Liter, which converts to about $3.98 USD per gallon. More often, we paid .99 CAD/Liter, with converts to a *slightly* more reasonable $2.81 USD/G.

Stateside, marine gas ranged from $2.20 a gallon in Everett, WA to $2.60 a gallon in Friday Harbor, WA.

My boat gets about 3 gallons per hour. Considering that I cruise at 20 knots in good weather with no current, that converts to... about 7.67 statute miles per gallon. Not too bad, for a boat, but then again it's only a 40 HP motor. My dad's boat gets about 5 GPH, but he only cruises at 9 knots which makes for something like 2 statute MPG.

At least he was at a land-based station. Those marine fuel docks can really gouge you, since their customers are more or less captive.

Huge tanks aren't that rare in boats, since they burn through the stuff so quickly. My dad's carries 80 gallons, and my uncle carries about 130. I only have two 6.5 gallon portable tanks. :)

Heh, yeah. You should have seen whenever my grandpa filled his old 60' converted seine boat. It has a Murphy diesel the size of a VW Bug (which would stay warm for a good 24 hours after being shut off), and he carried enough fuel so that he only needed to fill up every 6 months (!) or so. Three or four thousand gallons, IIRC. (!!)

The one time I saw him "top her off," he cleaned out the fuel dock's diesel supply and really did spend enough to buy a *good* used car. :)
