Is the new Nissan 350Z supposed to be fast?

I met up with one on the highway today. When he went by me and I noticed his plate, XLR82XS. (I guess that means accelerate to excess...) Okay, whatever....

Well, this car has won a lot of good reviews with words like "razor performance" (Motor Trend). Okay, it *does* have 290 horse and 275lbs of TQ, a 6-spd, aluminium everything....

Anyway, we both ran a good haul from 60mph to 100mph (100kph to 160kph). My

93GT is almost totally stock with a 5-spd and 2.73 gears. I thought for sure, losing 65 horse to this car, and with my gears, that he'd pull on me. Well, the bottom line is that I pulled on him. Not much, but I did. And I never took it out of 3rd gear.

I know for some reason my 93 is the fastest 5.0 I've had... it's just got a lot of get-up-and-go. But seriously, if that's the best these expensive high horsepower cars can do against some relic like a Fox-bodied GT, I'm keeping my 5.0 forever... Gawd, just think if I ever actually did something to it.

Anyone else ever run against this car? I for one was pleasantly surprised.

Well, I wont pass judgement but I can't help but mention at least something about public racing....... when they scrape your sorry ass up off the pavement, I can only pray that you haven't taken an innocent with you.

Good day young sir, if you are seeking to impress, it hasn't happened here....

The new Zs are supposed to run about a 14.0 at around 100 mph in the quarter.

As for your '93 LX, is this the one with a Cobra engine I read about in another thread? If so, I guess you can figure your car is probably good for at least a mid 13 at maybe 105.

Good kill!

Does the 93 Mustang GT put out something around 290 or 300 lbs of torque? Maybe that was what made the difference... ? Just the other day, on the way to the lake, I played a lil bit with one of those new Z's. Not really racing. A 70mph speed limit highway. No one else around. Going up a very steep hill. We both got up to around 90 approaching the hill (neck and neck but him pulling ahead) and when we got on the incline I pulled ahead a tiny bit and he slowly fell behind. Had to drop down into 3rd gear. Yeah, he could have been letting off his gas but based on everything else, like that he was winding his engine to high RPMs in each gear, I'm sure he was trying his damndest to win.

I've seen many at the track and none have ever dipped below 14's. They're nice cars, but they made them a little weak in the HP department IMO. I actually considered getting a 350Z not too long ago. However, I really wanted to get something that performed better than my 99 GT, which the 350Z did not.

Since I got my 03 Cobra, I've only toyed with these 350Z's twice. They are absolutely no match for the Cobra. Also, some of these 350Z drivers get pretty upset when you lay down a spankin' on them (doing the old "losers flyby", etc.).

How does the Cobra feel when spanking the throttle compared to the GT"? i ask this because i had a 2000 GT and was quite bored with it and didnt want to keep adding mod after mod. im saving for an 03 cobra, or a used Steeda. Can you give us an i dea what too look for. thanks......tom

One of the nice things about cars is that you can mod them. Alot of us actually do. A nicer thing about the mustangs is that they are not anywhere near their limit when you buy them (the 350Z is a quick car, but....), so without doing anything that will put you in the 350's price range, you can put more than 400hp AND (the big and is because that's where acceleration comes from) more than 500fl lb of torque to the pavement - mine does, and all it does is eat tires until on the freeway. It's nice for passing on two lane roads, but now that I have kids, I'm normally travelling at 60mph in the right lane.

It feels quite a bit quicker. However, I think most of that "feel" comes from the 3.55 rear end and close ratio 6-speed. Third gear pulls just as hard as 2nd gear, where in my 99 GT, 3rd gear was way too tall. The tall 3rd gear made me run out of steam real fast.

Thank God! :D

Was told by a salesdude that the 350Z will do the quarter in under 9 seconds! :o Where *DO* they train these clowns? Stop by Kelley Nissan in Beverly, MA. for a good laugh!

Sorry Patrick, my 93 is just a plain GT. Only mods are minor: exhaust, H-pipe, synthetics, timing at 17 (and in perfect running condition.)

Not much to worry about going from 60 to 100 on a divided 4 lane highway with no turns, no one around and where you can see the prairie for miles in any direction Jim. I was more worried about blowing a tire at that speed.

But yeah, that 350Z was trying. No doubt about it.

Perhaps by some. Not by me. Hopefully not by Ford either. While the 2005 Mustang doesn't appeal to me in looks (niether does the 350z), hopefully it will be a competent all around performer so it can still compete with the ever-lower priced import performance cars. I hope they don't ditch the IRS idea.

I have my suspension dialed in perfectly for my tastes, and I'll keep this car. However, it is a pain in the butt to fix a screwed up chassis and crappy suspension components.

i wouldnt even buy if it did have

See, we can agree from time to time ;)

Ford *does* have that uncanny ability to make cars that grow on people. So I may change my mind on the looks. More importantly though, I hope OTHER people who are in the market for sporty cars buy the Mustang--keeping the product line going and developing. If the Mustang goes the way of the Crapmarobird went, an entire generation will be stuck with EVOs and WRXs as their pony cars, like Patrick was talking about in a later post.

Actually you just answered your own question. They don't train these dudes in anything other then closing the deal and filling out the paper-work. Some of em can't even get that right. Most modern sales persons know nothing about the product line they are selling. I don't even thing they take time to read the brochure. I recently had one spend 10 minutes trying to figure out how to open the hood.

The best sales story I've ever heard was when the salesperson told the potential buyer that the dash button with the snowflake on it engaged and disengaged the all-wheel-drive. "See how smooth it engages? You can't even tell," as he pushed the button. The button, of course, was for the air-conditioning.

The RX-8 and 350ZX perform a lot better in the marketing literature than in real life. A new generation of suckers is born every ten years apparently.

That's pretty funny! I loved it when I was able to trip up the sales guy when he tried to tell my mom that the 2001 V6 Coupe (used) he was trying to push on her came with the Mach 1000 sound system.

I asked, "Really? Where are the 12" woofers?"

"Right there in the rear deck lid" as he's pointing to the 6x9's

I held up my had to stop him from spouting more bull and told him to open the trunk. Then I showed him where the 12" speakers were supposed to be and the special rack that holds the amps. My next words were, "Go back inside and read your brochures before you piss me off again."

That moron just wouldn't give up. When my mom told him she didn't want the dark blue/purplish colored coupe (we came looking for verts) she started getting a little pissed. At that time, I told the guy where to park the coupe (wasn't polite about it) and suggested to my mom that we go visit the dealership where she got her Escort GT.

All I can figure is he came from the same school that turned JD sour on dealerships!

I like the styling of the 2005 concept better than the '95 - '03 models, and though I can't say what my financial condition will be like a year from now, I do plan to buy one.

1) I've never owned a sports car 2) I've always wanted a '67 Mustang...I figure an '05 will run better though ; ) 3) My 10-year-old Honda just hit 200,000 and I'm eager to drop it 4) From what I've heard, the price will be about right
