Oil question: syn to non-syn to blend and back again!

Hi all,

A general question: what are the rules for changing oil types. I can never seem to get it straight...can you change from standard to full synthetic? At what mileage? Is there any point at which changing to synthetic can be bad? Can you change from full synthetic to standard?

You get my gist.

Thanks in advance!

If your car is not in the first couple of hundred miles (use the oil that came with it to do initial break in), change to whatever your want. It's all compatible - question is why do you want to use fossoil? Synthetics are a much better choice (unless you are leasing the car and are not going to keep it - then do what ever), why do you think that posche, bmw, ferrari, and almost every real race car runs em? They are better - send some oil to spectrol (lab in ohio(?)) to figure out how fast your bearings, guides etc are wearing - cheaper in the long run and will give you less wear in your motor. Regular oil is cheap in the short run, but you are obviously interested in cars, and if you run a mustang, you can make it last by doing proper maintainence - I've regretted selling mustangs, never will again.

I'd heard something about switching to synthetic in a much older engine (like over 100k) could cause the seals to leak or erode further or something...i guess that was just talk though...my current mustang (a '73) has bad valve guides and seats b/c the previous owner ran unleaded gas through it, so unless there's a real benefit to using synthetic in relation to this problem...I'm going to have to rebuild the engine soon anyway...that's why i was asking.

Thanks for the help!

hey, they dont make seals erode more, the thing is, synth oil moves away more of the oil sludge and some seals that should be leaking already might be covered with oil sludge from the dino oil. so in fact you are just making a leak that was already there appear properly. synthetic is better for your engine. but in a car with >100k miles you might make some problems that were already there appear.

i dont think it would help with your valve stems/guides/whatever. sounds like a good time to rebuild the engine with some performance parts, head for example :) so much more fun then.

bye
