Tire rub...

Howdy.. I need help with an idea. I have 03 GT vert that is lowered one inch. Well the tires (285's) on the rear are out even with the wheel wells. I've rolled the inner fender lips up to reduce the rubbing issue somewhat. I know that drag cars sometimes use a bladder on the right rear to reduce the right rear wheel from lifting off on a start. That's where I got the idea. What I would like to try is installing Airlift 1000 bladders in the rear springs. Does anyone think or know if this will stop the rear body\axle roll when hitting a drive way at an angle? I've checked and when turning into my approach from the street the tires (left or right) dive into the well about



4 inches! What causes so much roll...soft rear springs? Would coilovers be a better option or just buy brand new 275's for the rear? ...help!...

Are you running 17" or 18"? I have the same problem on my '96 with 18" 285's in the rear. My car is lowered a little more than an inch, though, so the rubbing is pretty severe. The rear springs are C's and were cut, so I'm guessing that, coupled with the 18" rim is what causes the rubbing to be so extreme. Every day I see a few little strips of rubber hanging from the rear tires. I'm thinking of stiffer springs if that will help.

I have the 17's with 1 3\8ths H&R spacers in back..I'm shopping for new wheels though. I also have the "C" springs uncut. I was hoping the Airlifts (65 bucks from Summit) would allow some stiffness control.

Did cutting the rear spring level your cars stance?

how about raising the rear body are to its orignal height??? thats what the engineers did to keep it from rubbing the tires???? some people ????

Have you done anything like sub frame connectors to the car, or a strut tower brace, preferably both? I have noticed a significant decrease in body roll on mine since installation, and my car is lowered with 18" wheels on it I have never had a tire rub on her. The only other thing would be maybe a little narrower tire

Thanx Kate.. I was thinking the narrower tire is the ultimate answer! I do have an MM tower brace installed...that did stop the cowl shake over rough surfaces. I do have subframes that need to be installed. I'd like to weld the torque box seams while I'm at it.

Yes, cutting the springs leveled the car, finally! I hated the raked look! Looks great on a Chevelle, but not an SN95. ;-)

Well I see a few things that could help. As you suggest a smaller tire would help, but how about losing the spacers or going with a thinner setup? That's gotta be cheaper than new rubber. As for the air bag idea it might work how you will be changing your spring rates pretty good. If you put your springs and tire package on for looks then this may not bother you, but if you actually did it for handling I doubt you'd be happy with the results. Another option may be a different offset rim for the rear.

Now THAT is a matter of opinion I personally love the raked look. Not necessarily on a Fox, but on the SN95 I like it.

You might put the subframes on and see how she goes, it -hopefully- might be a nice surprise

You have a few options... You can go with a more narrow rearend, use narrower and/or shorter tires, raise the rear, stiffen the rear (not of much use if its just a curb problem). Personally, I'd try to find just how severe the rubbing is and adjust my tire size accordingly, provided it is minor. Good Luck...

It'd be fine on an SN95, Kate, if there was something to fill the rear wheel well. ;-)

Aww heck, put some mud flaps on 'er with the little chrome nekkid ladies, then no one will notice that the tires are skinny LMAO!

The rear axle moves sideways in hard turns or when you are "hitting a drive way at an angle". The bushings in the rear control arms deflect under load and allow the axle to move sideways. The bushings need to be somewhat soft to allow the suspension to move vertically without binding. Stiff enough bushings to solve your problem would prevent the suspension from working. The only solution to prevent sideways axle movement is some kind of link system. The most common is a panhard bar. I put one on my car to improve the handling (immensely btw). It could also be used to maintain the clearance for wide tires with the side benefit of great handling.
