weird noises in 04 Z - squeak + rattle

Hey,

I am experiencing 2 noises in my 04 Z (6 months old, stock touring, ~4500 miles, K&N filter), any suggestions where these might be coming from would be extremely appreciated:

1) squeak/chip/whistle when accelerating When I hit the gas harder (i.e. depress the pedal about 2 inches or so), or when shifting up and hitting the gas at the same time, I hear a squeak-like sound somewhere in the left front, possibly linked to the gas pedal itself. I noticed this sound about 1-2 weeks ago. Sound does not happen when speeding up gradually and/or shifting down.

2) rattle/marble/metallic sound in idle and first gear I noticed this months ago. Trying to reproduce at the dealership of course failed - sound didnt happen.

Car has to be warmed up (i.e driven for like 30-45 minutes).

Sound happens in first gear (e.g. going uphill - driveway, slanted parking lot- as well as on level surface). Might sound like 'marbles', metallic / rough metallic.

Also happens when car is in idle and running, hovering at around

750-1500-2000rpm. When I turn it off in idle, sounds like shatter/spin down. This sound goes AWAY when I depress the clutch pedal.

2nd sound does NOT happen at all (neither 1st gear or idle) when car is cold. I.e. this morning I didnt hear it at all.

Any ideas?

On the whistle sound you should check the intake to nake sur ethe intake is properly sealing around the K&N filter. YOu can develop a noise there if the filter is not seated properly.

Checked and reseated the air filter, made sure its all closed up. Noise is still happening.

So I assume that this is normal and every 350Z owner is experiencing the same noise in idle + 1st gear?

thanks!

I am experiencing the same noise coming from the front left and my car is stock under the hood, no mods. It seems to be heaviest in 1st and 2nd - then simmers down a bit - I am also hearing the very loud rattel while idling and have had the dealer look at it under warranty - they determined the noise to be normal at this time and offered no other information or explanation. I am now recently hearing a very loud clicking sound from the real axle area when the clutch is depressed just as i am releasing it - as the car goes into gear this sound is very loud and seems to be getting worse almost - it is newly noticed and have not had it examined yet - are you also experienceing a lerge amount of rattel in the cabin intereior

- i am in the rear view mirror, the dash - and now my door panel -

So, you bought a car that was built on a Monday. :-)

Whistling under the hood is almost always an air leak. Could be any of a number of places. Spraying suspected areas with WD40 should cause a temporary change in engine sound at idle when you find the right spot. Then tighten, repair, or replace the offending item.

The drive train rattle at idle or under light acceleration or deceleration is the dual mass flywheel, and is normal.

The rear end clicking is a problem with the rear axles working loose. There's a TSB out on it. Take it to the dealer and they'll tighten them up, or if the splines are damaged, they'll replace the axles and/or yokes.

The mirror rattle is a common complaint. A dab of RTV between the glass and the housing will stop it.

The passenger side dash noise is also a common complaint. This noise often comes and goes with changing temperature. A squirt of silicone spray at the base of the windshield usually stops it (for a while anyway).

A door rattle is usually something loose in the window mechanism, gotta open it up and fix that. It *could* be a broken or loose door clip, though. Check all around the inner panel of the door and make sure nothing is loose first before diving into the door.
