Looking into purchasing this truck (power package, AT). My needs for a truck are mainly home use (trips to Home Depot, etc) and for a short commute to work.
My concern is that the truck only has a 4 cyl. Wondering if anyone can tell me how this truck is for getting on the highways, power when AC is on and climbing hills. I'd be looking at a 6 cyl, but the price of this truck fits my budget.

I own a '98 Frontier King Cab XE that I bought new. It has a five speed manual transmission. The power is adequate for me, but sometimes it is necessary to down shift to 4th gear when going up hills. I-5, north of Los Angeles, in a stretch of road called "The Grapevine" is one example I can think of. Naturally, if you are traveling with a full load of passengers or cargo you performance will take a hit. I average about 25-27 MPG with a combination of city and freeway driving. I will be getting a new vehicle soon, but I will not be buying another Nissan truck; not because I don't like them (the '98 is my 5th Nissan truck in thirty years), but the new trucks are bigger than my current one, and their EPA mileage estimates are not as good as my '98. While I like Nissan trucks, I don't have much respect for their dealers. There may be some honest ones, but in my limited experience, I have not found them yet. It helps to have a good independent mechanic. My next vehicle will be a Honda Fit.

Thanks Robert. I purchased an 07 Frontier XE today and so far I'm very happy it. Seems like the 4 cyl is fine around town. I took it on a test drive and up a large hill on the highway with the AC on. Wasn't too bad. I can live with it since I'm not on the highway all that much.
I think the savings in gas money will win me over in the long run. The rest of the truck is really nice too.

I bought a 2007 Frontier XE about a month ago. 4 cylinder, 5 speed automatic is plenty good for this old man to drive to and from work. About 20 miles each way, of mostly city driving. Getting 19 mpg so far. Good luck with yours.

Dave, quick question for you. Just need a comparison between your 4cyl/AT truck and mine since they are both the same.
My truck is making a whining sound (lower in pitch then higher in pitch during acceleration) that seems to be coming from the tranny. Do you have the same sound or not? Don't know if this is an inherant sound or something to be concerned with.
