do maxes require premium fuel?

Hey you maxima owners. Does the max require premium gasoline? Does it depend on model year?

All 1995 or newer V6 Maximas recommend premium fuel (maybe also earlier SE models). But they have anti-knock sensor, so they will run fine (with less power) on lower grade fuel. It may not even be much of an issue in cold winter weather.

Would that apply to Pathfinders also? W W

3.3L, no, 3.5L, yes.

Are there any models where premium is mandatory?

I would assume 350zs, 3.5 Infinities, would require it. Maybe the new Max 3.5s are detuned a bit to distinguish them from the Infinities. Is that correct?

tks for the responses. Don

No - they are all the same. The engine resets any timing adjustments made because of the knock sensor every time you start it. If you are using less than the recommended octane (premium), it has to start knocking, trigger the knock sensor, then adjust the timing on every single trip. Over a long period of time, there could be engine damage.

The knock sensor is intended to get you though short periods of regular gas, not the life of the car.

I have the 3.5 Infiniti QX4. User manual says OK to use 85 octane except at lower altitudes. Most driving done between 4K foot and 10K foot altitude. So I was curious for replies. Purchased 2 months ago. a 2001 year. Getting 18 to 20MPG on highway. Seems to run Ok. W W

Bingo. If you want to run cheap gas, don't buy a high performance car.

I doubt it says it's "ok", it probably says they recomend using premium but you can use as low as 85 in an emergency.

Besides... if you have a 15 gallon tank, you save a whopping $1.50 for "medium" grade, $2.50 to $3.00 for premium. I don't know about you, but if you have a $30,000 car and can't afford premium gas... it's time to sell that car, move out of the trailer, buy a $3000 car, buy a house, and for God's sake, straighten out your priorities.
