99 max v6 engine. starter hangs momentarily. will this harm fly wheel

Probably not, but eventually it won't engage at all. Common problem with Maximas from '95 on. Take the starter out and re-grease it and it will keep going for another 4 or 5 years before you have any trouble with it again.
