torn rack and pinion boot (aka bellows boot, steering boot) - can it be pactched?

Apr 14, 2006 2 Replies

Hi. My rack and pinion boot is showing wear in two of the ribs at the end that connects to the tie rod. I'm wondering if it is advisable to patch it up using a garbage bag material. It's a '93 Altima a and has

140k on it. I'm trying to get another 30k before setting it out to pasture.

My ball joint dust boot is also cracked, and I'm going to do the same thing. Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks, Bill

Won't it dump all the oil out of the rack?

Personally I'd hate my steering to fail, that's an area I don't take chances. But it's your choice!

I would rather use some liquid brush-on electrical tape, sold everywhere (including walmart). In any case, the boot can be easily replaced, which i consider to be your best option.

Good luck
