it means there is a problem and you need to get it looked at.

Autozone and pepboys for free hook a test tool to your car to see what throws that condition. It will help you determine what might need to be done (sometimes a loose gascap can cause a light to turn on on some cars). They can also reset the light for you, if that is what you want to do.
