1992 Nissan Maxima with gas smell when left idling on cold mornings

Hi All,

Like the subject says, I start my Max in the morning to let it warm up, with the heater on of course. When I get into the car I can smell gas............nothing on the ground........when I open the hood I can smell a bit of gas as well. Car runs fine.............121,000km.............1992..............3.0L SOHC.....What could the problem be?

Thanks.

You probably have a fuel injector or two that has a slight leak or seap. When the car is cold the fuel injectors can sometimes seap a little gas. When they warm up, the injector body expands and the seap goes away. My 90 GXE does it in the winter but not in the summer. Nothing to be alarmed about unless it gets bad enough to become a fire hazard. If you don't know how to check this, you should probably have a mechanic check it out and give you a quote to fix it properly.

A very common problem is for a fuel hose conection to weep when the car is cold and seal up once it runs for a few minutes. I bet you'll see some signs of leakage at one of the hose connections on the fuel rail. You can try tightening the clamps but you may have to replace the hoses to solve this.

I had a visible seep at an injector on a '90 Integra many years ago. It looked to me like a fire hazard for sure. The mechanic couldn't see it, and sprayed the injector with some white powder. It didn't leave any tracks, so the diagnosis was "no problem found."

It never did leak after that, either. The experience never did stop bugging me. I guess they can leak when they feel like it.
