I just purchased and 02 maxima SE auto with 22K mi on it. i have had it for about a month and a half now. last week when i first pulled out of my parking space the brakes grind. now this happens every other day no matter if it is going down hill or level for about the first 3 or four times i use the brakes then they are fine and make no noise. do they need to be serviced? thanks

It just might a lot of brake dust. You can buy a brake pad spray cleaner at any auto supply store. Just remove wheel and place a news paper under brake assy. and spray away. If this does not help you need to get the rotors checked. ronm

Warped rotor(s)? Try and isolate which wheel the noise is coming from and check the rotor for wobble. Check to see if the pads on that wheel are flat/straight or "wedged". I had a grinding noise twice and both times it was a warped rotor. Leaving the parking brake on or only partially released when driving will warp those rotors enough to put them out of line with the caliper/pads.

I hear the same thing on mine, especially if I've washed the car and left it in the garage over night. It's not a problem. I've heard the same thing on previous cars I've owned (non Nissans).

This is a common problem with 2K + maximas. I have seen rust gather on my rotors after a few hours of rain. The brakes are made of rather cheap metal, they tend to warp and rust easily. Don't worry about the noise it's just the pads clearing the rust. If your brake rotors ever need changing get an after market setup. Nissan needs a slap for putting these rotors on in the first place.

I had the same problem on my 2000. Also had high speed braking vibration.

There are service bulletins on this problem.

Nissan replaced my front pads, and turned the rotors under warrantee.

If it sounds like just a bit of rough running, it's just moisture. That can happen with seasonal variations. If you live in the desert, I'd worry. Otherwise, it may happen with a little rain and/or changing temps.

If it sounds more raspy like metal on metal, then you should get it checked.
