Following Nirav's instructions I now have a shiny new ECT sensor snuggled next to the valve cover. The engine starts ten times quicker, no uh-uh-uh-uh over and over. But, now that I've had some success I want more! Starts are still not perfect. For example, when I start my Chrysler, key turns, engine fires up immediately. With the new sensor, the Max tries to start the first time, stumbles a bit and gives up. Turn key again, stumble, give a little gas, and she fires up. Now I know most who saw how starts used to be would poo-poo my wish for perfection, but why not? Starter motor seems ok. I turned the lights on, started her up, and there was almost no reduction in lighting. Any ideas what I should check next?

Did you clean out the TB and IACV as well?
If you really want to get into it, I suppose you could check the fuel pressure. The fuel pump turns on for a few seconds when the key is in the on position to build up fuel pressure for startup. If there isn't sufficient fuel pressure, you could get hard starting too.
The only to hook up a fuel pressure gauge is to pull the rubber outlet hose from the fuel filter, insert a T-fitting and attach the gauge to the T. I've never done this yet on my car, but I hope to - more out of curiously and to learn than to solve a problem.

Yep, cleaned the TB. Found the location of the IACV but have no idea how/what to clean. Have you got a few instructions or a site that has them?
Spent most of my time reading about air flow etc. and its importance to good mileage plus startup. That brings me back to a question I asked some time ago for which I offered a garbled description. I'd like to try again. 8(
Lets follow the air path toward the throttle body. It comes in the air intake, up through a duct to the air filter and then through the MAF. At this point, still working toward the throttle body, it connects to a part(what is its name - I went through the whole Nissan book last night and could not find it) that has a hose connection winding back to the valve cover. It is this connection between the MAF and unnamed part that buffaloes me.
Both are circular extrusions about 2 in. in diameter. One goes inside the other and both are clamped to seal them. The MAF extrusion is soft rubber while the unnamed part's is hard plastic. My common sense (oh oh) tells me that the rubber extension from the MAF should be placed over the hard plastic extension of the unnamed part and clamped. But, when I took it apart, the soft rubber extension from the MAF was inside that of the unnamed part and clamped. Which is correct? Does it matter as long as no air is entering from a poor seal?
I beleive, but don't quote me, that the hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake is there as part of emissions. It re-circulates the unburnt charge back to the intake system.
