'96 Max - Noisey Valves/Engine at cold start.

Hi everyone.

The engine valves sound noisy and the engine runs very on a cold start.

The sound is like a diesel engine or an engine with the timing slightly off. The engine is very "boggy" when you press the throttle, adding throttle makes it worse. It takes around 3 minutes to go away. Hot/Warm starts are fine.

What would cause this? Bad gas (I burn 91 octane), some engine sensor gone?

I recently (4 weeks?) had this car in for an Oxygen sensor repair. Major tune-up was done in December (didn't do it then).

It's been getting louder/worse over time. I can live with it, but I'm worried its causing damage to the engine.

Sounds like stuck / frozen lifters. Try Mobil 1. Worked for me on 91 Max.

I second the Mobil 1 Oil, or at least a fully synthetic oil. You can run it twice as long, if you are worried about the cost.

Also, make sure you use a decent oil filter. If you are getting your oil changed at the Quickie lube, their filters may not have an anti-drainback valve that keeps oil from running out of the filter when the engine sits. That's not the whole problem, but if that's the case it will at least help.
