'96 NISSAN MAXIMA MIL(Multiple indicator light) problem

I bought a '96 Nissan Maxima just for 2 months.But the MIL was on twice.So it costed me $600 to fix it. Is something wrong with the gas?Would you please tell me how to avoid this kind of situation again?
