Exhaust warning lamp connector

I found a connector on my 1987 maxima in the fuse box that was disconnected. I reconnected the connector and tried to start the car but it would not start. I then disconnected the connector and the car started right up. It says reset at 30,000 and 60,000 miles and at 90,000 miles disconnect the connector. Whats the purpose of this?? Why does it have to be disconnected at 90,000 miles? Also, why would the car not start with the connector connected? The car has 116,000 miles on it.
