On Fri, 3 Oct 2003 21:43:34 +0100, a particular chimpanzee named "RB" randomly hit the keyboard and produced:

Lift the bonnet, and turn the key to the normal position (without turning the engine over) and listen. Does it sound like it's coming from just behind the radiator?

I had a loud rasping sound as described above on my 306 for a short while. IIRC, the Peugeot mechanic said it was a bi-metallic strip in the diesel pump. He said it wasn't causing any problem, and as my car wasn't covered by a warranty at the time, it didn't seem worth spending money on it. The noise went away after a few months.
