Peugeot 406 Auto problem

I have a 1997 406 automatic. Occasionally and usually when first starting up the auto box goes into 'get you home mode' ie. stays in 3rd with the two dashboard orange indicator lights flashing. After a short drive I can usually clear in by turning off the ignition and setting off again. It seems to do this more often when the car has been parked in hot sun (not that hot though, I lived in London....). On every other occasion the box works fine, although its a high mileage car at 88k. The fluid level is ok.

So mechanically the box seems ok but presumably a sensor somewhere occasionally thinks otherwise. The sun heat part of the symptom seems unlikely I know but nevertheless it does seem to b e part of the equation.

Anyone got an idea what the problem is? What sensor it might be and where is it?

Thanks in advance.

there a ton of sensors, you have to get it to the pug tugs to get a diag2000 readout, probably they find the handbrake sensor or something faulty and replace it after wich your problem still exists and you limp home again, only many pounds lighter

the other thing could wel be

defective airflow meter defective injector defective fan sensor ( under the airfilter housing) defective fan defective oilpresure sensor

if it is a DW10 engine ( HDI ) maybe your due to a new fuel filter i'm afraid i'm blue as is comes to petrol versions.

all of the above and more, the connectors might have been corroded. clean them and spray them with 226 lube reconnect them then seal them of with D2 sealant.

Hi Marc,

I don't think it has something to see with the automatic gearbox management. Still, it could well be a sensor on the gearbox (which one ? I don't know), or a faulty connector.

usually the airflow meter causes the 406 to go in limp home mode the two heating plates in them have a limited lifespan, however broken is broken, when they go they go @ once the other reason could be that the fan relays have a faulty conection. i experienced a weakness in the box that contains them ( behind the pug schield in the grille) water easely comes in and the corrosion is tremens causing the fans to cut out. from the OT i understand that the problem is not persistant, ths the conclusion might very wel be one of the above as wel as your suggestion. however there are a ton of sensors so the diag 2000 can be of help... the pug dealer just charges next months rent for it.

Hi,

I get it, but the AFM fail only concerns engine management, isn't it ?

It worthes a check, but I'm pretty suspicious.

True, although I'm afraid there is no other solution to diagnose it. Perhaps could he try to get in touch with an automatic gearboxes specialist ? I guess it's a ZF.
