2000 Grand am GT windows scratching

I have a 2000 GT which I bought new. I've had this problem with the drivers and passengers side windows getting scratched. I had first taken it in back in 02 for this and they replaced glass and outer belt molding. The problem reoccurred numerous time sins then. Each time they tell me its dirt and sand found in outer belt molding, and they just clean it out. Now that my original warranty has expired and my extended does not cover this. they tell me its my problem. Of course I went ballistic on our good friends at Goodwrench. I then called GM Customer Satisfaction to get some satisfaction....bitched at them on how stupid it was that dirt was causing this and how it shouldn't be happening on a $30,000 (original price of course) car. They are currently looking into it. Anyway enough of my ranting. has anyone heard of this, and how I can stop it from happening. I really would prefer not to change the glass every few years.

Thanks

YOu did not say exactly where and to what extent the scratches occur. So this reply may or may not apply to your problem. However... There is a pad that pushes against the window to keep it on the moulding. That pad collects dirt and grit. The dirt and grit scratches windows. If that pad is loose, the window will be loose. If that pad is too tight, the dirt and grit will grind into the window. In any case, the windows will eventually scratch.

As Paul has mentioned the pads rubbing the glass, Is the area being scratched about 2 1/2 inches long? If so, then I'd say the pad or something caught in the pads are scratching the glass.

Are the scratches reoccurring in the exact same spot as before?

Have the inside of the doors inspected. Could be somehing else inside the door contacting the glass. Any rattles in the door?

Have the doors undergone major body repair prior to you buying the vehicle?

You didn't say, but is it the outside of the glass getting scratched?

Are the scratches from top to bottom or just in a spot say 6-7 inches in height?

Both front windows on my 2002 Sunfire GT, the 2001 Alero I used to own, and the 99 Sunfire I had all had the same problem, and since it's glass, my dealer wouldn't do a thing. Ya'd think that being stung twice by GM's lousy customer service, with the 99 sunfire and 01 alero, that I'd have gone to another brand, but Noooooooo...I go and buy a 02 GT. Dumbass, huh?

Hey there. I have a 99 Grand Am, and I was having the same problem a few years ago. Has anyone checked to see that the window is set properly in it's track. That's what was wrong with mine. It kept getting scratches on the inside of the glass, and it was hesitant to go up once in a blue moon. I had to have the window regulator and motor replaced and I haven't had a problem since. Luckily it was under an extended warranty. GM has a lot of problems with their window motors/regulators going out, from what I've heard anyway. Hope this helps. (I have the invoice if you need a price quote.)

I had a regulator replaced before 30,000 km.
