When I filled up my '01 911 a few days ago, the fuel gauge remained where it had been, about one-quarter full.
Any ideas for avoiding the dealership?

Sounds like a "sender" issue, and that baby is in the fuel tank. This is not a good DIY project...what with electricity, gas, etc. A good independent shop can fix it...probably for less than the dealer.
