I'm looking at a 1987 924 w/191,000 miles. The speedometer is a 5 digit display. I was looking at picture of a 1987 944 and the speedometer shown is a 6 digit display. Did the 924 only come with a 5 digit? Also, the car looks pretty good, but what should I check when I examine the car?

Mike, The 924S (the model you are looking at) had the retro interior of the original 924 and 1983-1985 944's. Those cars came with only 5 digit odometers. In 1985.5 the 944 got the updated dash that you saw in the 1987. The 924S is closer to the 944 than the original 924's from the 70's. I believe that the engine you're talking about was only used in the 944 for a fairly short period of time. If memory serves me, the 944 got minor engine updates till' the S2 varaint when the engine was largly overhauled.
The 2.5 liter 8v engine was used from 83-86 in the 944. In 87, Porsche bumped the displacement to 2.7 liters, but it was still 8v. The turbo also got the 8v engines, but the S versions were all 16v.

944 - 2.5 8 valve 944 S - 2.7 8 valve 944 S2 - 3.0 16 valve Turbo - 2.5 8 valve, turbocharged Is that correct?
Steve, the 944S was a 16 valve (definitely) and originally a 2.5, then 2.7 (I think).

There were no 2.7 imported into the U.S. They came from Canada.
