According to my official Rover workshop manual: Test with cylinder head removed Screw each bolt into place finger tight. Distance from cylinder block face to under bolt head must be less than 97mm.

OR Test with oil rail removed Screw each bolt into oil rail until finger tight. If full length of thread is engaged, bolt may be re-used. If full length of thread not engaged, measure distance from top face of oil rail to under bolt head. This must be less than 378mm.

Speaking of the manual - if anyone wants it, I'm open to offers as it doesn't cover my 600 (bought it when I had a 420 which Haynes doesn't do a manual for). It's in West London (v.heavy to post - about 3" thick). It originally cost me about £35 if I recall correctly.....

This technique for measuring the bolts is to determine if the threaded part of the bolt has stretched - if it has, the bolt will foul at the stretched thread, if not it will keep going until it bottoms out on something. The bolt will not stretch by anything like 40mm (hopefully!) Bit obscure, but if the critical factor was the amount of stretch, the obvious method of just measuring the length of the bolt would be more sensible. AFAIK the Haynes figures for tightening the bolts are correct, in any case my car was done to these settings with no ill effect to date. Hope this helps Bob
