Well, short and sweet Papa :)

I can't see it much more difficult than disconnecting the belt, removing the alternator, bolting in the new one and re-connecting the belt (and electrics). Looks like a "one spanner" job to me.

It depends. On my 87 c900, it takes a while to get the alternator out. The AC compressor bracket needs to be removed in order to "swing" the alternator up to remove the pivot bolt. Do not disconnect the hoses from the compressor, there is enough room to move it out of the way. The alternator bracket has 3 mounting screws. The eaiest method to get the pivot bolt out is to remove the top bolt securing the AC comp. bracket and the allen bolt at the rear of the bracket. Then loosen the bottom allen and use it as a pivot to swing the alternator up. The allen bolts use a 5 or 6 mm allen wrench.

Question, what is wrong with orginal alternator? If it is mechanically sound and just is not outputing current any longer, then you can purchase a new regulator for it (at least the older models). On mine, there are only two phillips screws that hold the regulator in place. The regulator is self contained including brushes. The usual failure is the brushes which can also be purchased at a very low cost of around $5 per set. Replacement is a little tricky if you have not done a fair amount of soldering.
