In looking for a used Saab I've come across a 98 900 and 99 9-3. Mileage is similar but the price on the 900 is a certainly lower. I was hoping for some suggestions as far as quality and reliability issues involving these two models. I know a lot will depend on the 2 individual cars but I was wondering about any known differences between the two.

The main differences are small cosmetic changes. Choose the car that is in better shape or is a better value.

I'd say that the '98 is a better choice. It's the last year of the NG900 an all the new model issues had been worked out. The '99 is actually the first year of the new model - although there were surprisingly few issues there. Still, the '98 is the best deal.

The 9.3 from '99 is just what other brands would call a face lift, when a model has been produced produced a few years, only thing is that SAAB wanted to introduce the new model numbering at that time. The new 9.3, however, is a brand new model altogether, although it has the same 9.3 model number as that 9.3 from '99. Bottom line: Just buy the one you like the best. /per

It was a facelift, but a comprehensive and extensive one. I'd heck into the background of both cars, but unless the newer one has been involved in a crash or has something odd in its history, I'd most certainly go with the newer 9-3. It's a no brainer in that case, really.

The NG 900 had several "issues"...particularilly the clutch, idler pully gears, ventillation system that were rectified with the '98 NG900. There is not a lot of obvious differences between the '98 and '99.

... also not purely a cosmetic facelift: the 9-3 should handle better and would protect you a bit better in the event of a crash. Drive both cars: you may feel that the better handling of the 9-3 is worth the extra money

I have a 99 9-3 for the last year. Other than regular maintenance, no problems. The interior I found excellent compared with the 900 and the car handles better than the 900. If you can afford it go for a 2000SE (NICE!)
