Well, it's more complicated than what you are saying because you are overlooking the *fact* that viscosity decreases *dramatically* with increase in temperature.

Oh, and viscosity is not measured in "weight", as in 30 weight or 10 weight. As I told you before, viscosity is measured in cSt (centistokes).

The oil is either thick or thin. It is either hot or cold. Measure it any way you like. The principle is the same. MV oil has its limits. When the limits are exceeded it fails and produces poor lubrication.

In time you will understand....maybe.

And it can either be thick because it's cold, or thick because it's been cooked and chemically changed. Right?

Since you have failled to comprehend the facts in this discussion I would tend to agree with you. Wreck your own engine.

Maybe I'm just skeptical... but if MV oils cause sludge, how come Saab has not issued a TSB telling everyone to stop using them? They are paying for an awful lot of pan cleanings and engine rebuilds these days. If it was as simple as "don't use MV oil", I think they'd have a handle on it.

You are correct about MV oil not always providing the protection we need, but only in a couple of limited applications. At the race track, when engine starts are minimal in number and temperature range, straight oil is needed. On the dyno with a high HP motor, straight oil is needed.

On the street, where frequent starts occur in temps from 0F or less to

100f or more, where trips are often short, or long, or mixed, but rarely at full throttle, MV is the only thing that saves your engine.

Do you have any evidence that this is the case? I see mostly multivis synthetics used as racing oils these days.

I will try to find you some links. Some guys recently have fried some expensive motors with Mobil-1. I didn't believe it myself until I read some of the reports but M1 apparently has some issues in these applications.

Yeah, I'm not all that enamored of M1 these days. I prefer Shell Rotella T Synthetic in pretty much all of my vehicles, but that isn't racing oil either.

yeah it does, but that is a throw-away spam trap address that I rarely check. Better off just replying here. Besides, you never know, someone else may be interested... ;-)

If oil thins when cold and thickens when heated, why do they need block heater and 0w rated oils in artic climate countries, to stop the oil turning to the consistency of fudge, and blowing apart the filter when first started.

Also, when changing oil, if it thickens when hot, why do you warm the oil up before draining to make sure the maximum oil *flows* out when it is more liquid. Surely wou would want the oil stone cold and all of it back at the sump, if it is thinnest when cold?

Here's a saab specific thread. It's long, some of it is subjective, but there are enough posts referencing credible tuners having issues with Mobil-1 that it paints a bad picture for high perf or racing motors.

I took a quick look. This is total BS. The guy blames Mobil 1 for his engine fragmenting, but gives no specific evidence that the oil was the real problem. And this is a 2 liter engine with boost high enough to make 300+ hp? Please... the oil he was using was the least of his problems.
